back in 2005 we got a good deal with there "excess baggage company" in london (though I beleive they are nation wide). 0208 324 066 and 0208 324 2057 (we've still got the boxes given some of stuff hasn't been unpacked after 2 years!! They deal with Transpro/Asian tigers on the other end, who are a very well respected agent and moving company here in Thailand. They also have a good relationship with customs, so things (in my experience) were facilitated quickly. DO NOT try and deal with customs yourself, as they are pretty corrupt and will see you coming a mile off.

As I recall we had about 6 cubic meters and door to door it was about 500 quid, which included all packing and unpacking. Good value

Another tip, if your wife is a Thai national, and has lived outside of Thailand for more than 12 months, have all the items shipped in her name, and they won't be charged any duty at the other end as Thai's living overseas for a year are entitled to bring back one shipment of personal goods (used) in their name, duty free. The agent at the thai end will request your wifes passport to see the exit date and the latest entry date and will take the passport to customs as proof of her duty free entitlement.

I have lived outside Thailand for more than 12 mos and my scenario is this…..

I want to move back to Thailand around the next December, but also want to do some house hunting prior to the move…..let’s say from Jan-March then fly back to the US for the final move preparation.

My question is

Once I get to Thailand again in December….

Can I still use the exemption for the duty free “as a thai national who have lived outside for more than 12 mo? Or will I lose my exemption due to that 3 mo of house hunting in Thailand?

It's really going to depend on where you're coming from and whether you or your wife are Thai?

you best check with customs on this, but I beleive there is a 6 month time gap in which you exploit from when you return to Thailand for the first time.

Remeber though, you'll have to show your Thai passport(s) showing the last time you got stamped out of Thailand and the time you returned. That is what I had to do at least.

Yes I also back up what Samran says concerning Excess company and their local agent here. Recently used them to import household effects and the service was good. I did a lot of research on UK based removal/shipment companies and Excess proved to be very competitive on price and they are also quite a well-respected company in their line of business.

Thanks Samran

I have one more question.

Well the last time I was in Thailand my thai pp had expired prior to the trip. So I did use the US pp for in and out of Thailand during that 30 days vacation period. During this period, while in Thailand, I was able to renew my thai pp at Bangna, but didn’t use it to get out of Thailand though because I came in with the US pp so I thought I had to go out with the same pp. Therefore my old thai pp has only the out-stamp but never the in-stamp. Will they be able to cross reference between the US pp and the thai pp by just a simple searching of my name – for all my activities?

I doubt customs will be able to cross reference.

Given that you are a dual national, your next 'look see' trip could probably be done on your US PP. When you move back permanently, enter on your Thai. Submit old and new Thai PP's to the customs agent (they'll ask you to point out the exit and entry stamps). They just look at the stamps as proof or evidence that you are away.

This may not apply to you, as I don't know where you are coming from, but have a look at sevenseasworldwide.com.

I used them moving 3 tea-chest-size boxes from Oz to LOS (door to door in the Thai boonies) earlier this year. They have an on-line calculator so you can work out what it will cost.

And most importantly, they seem to have established very good relationships with Thai Customs, which may help to minimize any "taxes" payable. In my case it was a very manageable TBH1050.

Thanks kindly sir...... and may the lord Buddha drop you with many good fortune cookies!

:o

No worries Teacup. Absolute pleasure. I have offered similar advice to other long term Thai expats and they haven't had any troubles. Hopefully it will be the same for you.

As for lord buddha, if you chat to him soon, just tell him to skip the fortune cookies and just give me the wads of cash. Cash is easiest :D

Hi, I used ATEC in Southampton because I used to live there but I think that they ship out of Tilbury.

I can recommend their services.

700 pounds for 85 cubic ft if my memory serves me right. That was door to door, about 7 weeks timescale I think.

All in my wifes(Thai) name and we still had to pay customs about 10k Bht on what was valued at 3000 pounds for insurance purposes despite her having been out of the country a number of years.

Some are lucky and avoid the tax, others have to pay a little tea money. As it was mostly my stuff anyway I shouldnt complain too loudly.

Good luck with your move and if the company you choose has a good agent in BKK it should all go pretty smoothly.
