Hi Everyone,

I bought an Olympus OM40 many years ago, 2nd hand, without a manual. It's a great camera and I'm happy with it apart from the fact that I don't see how to turn off the light meter. It seems that every time i go to use it, I have to replace the batteries.

My old Olympus OM1 had a simple on/off switch.

Can anyone help? I can't believe that a newer, more advanced camera than the OM1 doesn't have an on/off switch.

The light meter is supposed to automatically shut off after 60 seconds of inactivity. This site suggests the battery choice may be important.

"Q: What type of batteries should I buy?

A: Buy two SR44 silver-oxide batteries or LR44 alkaline batteries. Do not use HR44 mercury batteries or two different types of batteries of the same size, or mix an old battery with a new battery . Always replace both batteries at the same time.

Q: How long do the batteries last?

A: Generally, SR44 batteries will last about one year and LR44 batteries about six months. "

Of course if there is a mechanical/electrical problem it may not shut off properly - so may just need to remove the batteries when you don't plan on using it for a long period of time.

Thanks for the advice Tywais.

My battery choice seems ok, maybe i will treat it to a service and see if that solves the problem.
