Went with some people to the border yesterday.

One of the guys was stamped in until yesterday, the 23rd September on a non immigrant visa. Now at the border, he expected to be stamped in until 22nd December, which is 90 days after 23rd September.

The signs on the wall and his stamp was until 21st December.

Now technically, that is correct but it also means that he is covered on 2 entries for 23rd September and that in fact, he will get only 89 days extra because he "loses" the 23rd September on the new stamp as he already had it.

As his plane was booked for 22nd December, this was of interest to him and though I know you can get one day at the airport, they still put a stamp in your passport so he has changed his flight, luckily at no cost.

I think this is an important point for those planning forward as I do in Excel and then this happens and you realise that you do indeed "lose" a day.

Yes they always count the arrival and leaving days.. Thats not uncommon most countries do it this way..

But of course if your visa running same day you get that one day counted both leaving and returning..
