Transiting from KL ,that should arrive at 12.30 midday.

I have choice to Air Asia at 13.55 or 20.45.

Obviously ,I would prefer the earlier flight ,but have 2 young children.

Would I be better ,booking the later flight & if arrive early asking to swop or vv ?

(I will pay standard fare ,so can change, subject to availability ?

that's EXTREMELY TIGHT !

If an international flight is part of the journey, I recommend to leave 2.30 - 3.00 hours for transfer at Suwannaphum with Air Asia.

they are sometimes late (though not as often as it used to be when the other domestic airlines still used Suwannaphum, but it still may happen, as delays do sometimes occur on any airline in the world), and they will probably close the check-in counter for ur connecting flight exactly 45 minutes prior to departure (in KL its ALWAYS like that - if u arrive 43 minutes before scheduled departure time, the counter will already be deserted.....).

in any case, no matter if ARRIVING or DEPARTING on an international flight, u will have to pass some kind of immigration check which may take 10-60 minutes.

I estimate your chances to get ur connecting flight is 70-30, if the arriving flight is on-time, and the crowds at immigration not toooo huge, should be okay. but then its still a big big risk. I wouldnt dare to book the earlier flight.

And do not forget: They give you just 15 kgs luggage. A few weeks ago I arrived with 24 kgs, and I had to pay 640++ THB to take that stuff to Phuket. Every other airline would just laugh about it, especially since I had only about 500 g of carry-on baggage. Never again. :D

Which airlines: KUL-BKK? BKK-??? ? What is your final destination? Domestic? International? Checked bags? Single ticket? No where near enough details to make an accurate assessment. My best guess is that you have checked bags, are on separate tickets and have a domestic flight ex-BKK perhaps CEI. If that is the case then you should ticket the later flight but ask at check-in in BKK if you can board the earlier flight provided you have enough time. Eight hours is a long-ish layover. Have looked at other options, perhaps from DMK, for your ex-BKK flight?

Most airlines recommend a 3 hour MCT at BKK for Int'l-Dom and Dom-Int'l.

ohh , air asia it is. When u arrive at Air Asia counter after the check in closing time, your can find a trash can right away and throw your ticket . Now for swapping or changing to earlier or later flight, even u wil pay the surcharges, it will be still impossible, since your more than the maximun time allowed for flight changes.Well, the last option, buy a new ticket, theyre happy to check u in right away (provided there is a seat). So, take the later flight then.

Now, for paying the excess luggage, well, its how they make profit, thats waht u paid for anyway. And forget about complaints, they just say, well, thats waht u paid for .. They even think that they have right to be rude because you pay cheap or in more harsh words, because we're cheap.

AirAsia is a point-to-point airline and very strict about check-in times. Counters open 2 hours before the flight and close 45 minutes prior to the advertised departure time of the flight.

Arrive 44 minutes prior to departure and your ticket is worthless.

I booked online for their new Gold Coast, Australia (OOL) to Bangkok (BKK) via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL) service for travel next month. Luggage is checked in at Australia and must be checked in again in KL, unlike MAS or Singapore Airlines, where you check your luggage in at Australia and retrieve it at Bangkok - all you do at your transit airport is relax.
