Does anybody know if a Thai International Driving Licence is acceptable for a Thai person driving in the UK using a settlement visa and if it is acceptable how long you can drive using an international licence in the UK.

Thanks.

A settlement visa is a U.K residency permit, so the UK police will only be tolerant for around about a month on an international licence.

Hi Martin,

My ex-wife (Thai) used a Thai international driving licence in the UK for a year at a time, just renewing the document when it expired. She had insurance but the premium was higher than if she'd had a full UK licence which she now has.

Scouse.

Thanks for the replies.

I use the Thailand UK website. It is very good.

My parents watch my kid on the TV from it, although the feed is a little poor some times.

I then followed up the link to DLVC sorry DVLA and they explain it very clearly.

A person can drive in the uk on an international licence for up to a year, and also they do not need 'L' plates, but they need to apply for a provisional licence to take the test. (Just glad we did not have to do that here!)

But it is best to take the test within that period. Otherwise you cannot legally drive.

Anyway, item closed.
