AFL Star Carey could face charges in two countries

Instead of showing up to a Miami Court to face serious assault charges, Wayne Carey has been in the island resort of Koh Samui, in Thailand where today he learned Victoria Police may be after him too.

What is perhaps more surprising is that he is here with his long-time partner Kate Neilson, with whom he is alleged to have had at least one serious domestic dispute.

Carey has not been going out of his way to hide: he wears a bright yellow shirt and eats at the front table of an upmarket seaside cafe, where he and his girlfriend are in full view of anyone strolling along the beach.

The dual AFL premiership captain has even been happy to pose for photos with fans who have recognised him.

The beachside restaurant is known as The Page, and the couple certainly seems to be turning over a new leaf.

But there are some other chapters in the Wayne Carey story that are coming back to haunt him — like revelations that an incident at his Port Melbourne apartment is still an ongoing affair, at least as far as police are concerned.

It's not yet definite that charges will go ahead, but investigators have prepared brief of evidence which they've submitted to more senior officers with the recommendation that Carey be charged with hindering and assaulting police.

And despite being in Koh Samui, there is little doubt that Carey would have been in contact with his US lawyer, Eric Marshall, who took the blame for his non-appearance in Miami last week.

Miami-Dade County judge Rosa Rodriguez was surprised to discover Carey — accused of kicking one US police officer and elbowing another during a brawl at a five star Miami hotel last year — was not in court for Friday's brief hearing.

The judge adjourned the case to April 18 so Carey could be present, with a trial date tentatively set for 10 days later.

A warrant could be issued for Carey's arrest if he fails to show.

US prosecutors said they were ready to proceed with the case that, if convicted, Carey could be sentenced to 15 years in an American jail.

That case pertains to an incident in October last year, when Carey allegedly smashed a wine glass in the face of Neilsen and then jostled with police when they were called to their hotel room.

In light of this, Koh Samui is the ideal destination for Carey, a place to simply get lost — be it in the hurly burly of the many party spots, the tranquility of the fishing villages or in the shadows of the giant Buddha.

Heaven here, but it could be hel_l back home.
