February 20, 200818 yr Hello everyone, My friend's mom will visit her daughter in Canada. She will fly from bangkok to Narita to Chicago to Montreal. Does she need trasit visa when she arrives in Ja pan and USA? Thanks, BJ
February 20, 200818 yr I believe in-transit passengers in the U.S. must go through Homeland Security Checks, something to be avoided if at all possible. Most Canadians fly direct to foreign stopovers and avoid the U.S. hassle. Is the Chicago leg necessary? Perhaps cheaper?

Khun ProExpat, I am afraid so because she will be going with someone whom already bought her ticket with Chicago transit. (my mom's friend doesn't speak English very well and need someone to accompany her on her trip to Montreal). Thank you, BJ

Does she need trasit visa when she arrives in Ja pan and USA? Thanks, BJ For Japan as long as her transittime is lessthan 24 hours and that seh stays airside (not going through immigration) she doesnot need any kind of visas. For the USA she does even if her transit time is minimal and that she goeson to an international destination. A transit visa is what she needs. If she already has a visa for Canada, it should be quite straightforward to obtain a transit visa for the USA but......
February 20, 200818 yr Should have tried to avoid flying those legs. I mean, there are others route, EU for example. I hope your Ma would get there to see you. All the best.
