Do All Thais Believe In Ghosts ?

Featured Replies

I would also add that 'ghosts' are a part of Thai/Buddhist religion. For a Thai not to believe in ghosts is essentially the equivalent of a Westerner not believing in God. "Ghosts" are the natural part of Buddhist beliefs, that upon death, the spirit leaves the body and may wander the earth before being reborn. In the West, ghosts are not a part of the religion as they are in Thailand. In Christianity, you die, you believe in Jesus, you go to heaven. The bible doesn't say your soul lingers on the Earth. The bible has no mention of ghosts.

Anamism?

Animism, yes, it does seem to have become partially intertwined with the Buddhist religion. Have a look around at the amount of Thai homes that have spirit houses in the grounds, One with a ladder going down for the spirits of the land and the other for the house spirits/ghosts. Even the large Condo's and high rise buildings will have a centralised one. look to see how many do not have fesh offerings on them on (Buddha Days) the monthly quarter of the moon days ,my house included! Of course not all Thais believe in ghosts/spirits but I suspect that the "non-believers" would be a fairly small minority.

I seem to remember from my days as a non-practicing Christian, the Lords prayer mentioned the "Father, Son and Holy Ghost" Also that "Jesus arose from the dead on the 3rd day" but don't quote me on that as I never did much study on the subject.

Whatever your beliefs, "have a nice day now" or whatever day you require!

Are these mentionings preceded by the term "Holy"?

I am interested to find out whether any of the Thaivisa forum readers/members know of any Thai person, whether family, friend or acquaintance that does NOT believe in ghosts? Stupid forum question, maybe, but I am keen to find out--any feedback gratefully appreciated.

I have been told by some Thais that they beleave that when a farang dies there spirit goes home. So there are no Farang Ghosts in Thailand?

WhaT if their home is in Thailand?

There country of birth of course. :o I dont make the rules. I just abide by erm :D

Every Thai I know believes in Ghosts. I never did but may change my mind. Golden Retrievers are NOT high strung nervous dogs and are not prone to senseless barking. Every time someone in the village dies, he howls. My wife thinks there is nothing strange about his howling. She just knows that someone has just died. ?????????

I work with 2 Thais, who believe that ghosts do not exist. Mind you, these people are "thinkers"...rare in this country.

As for myself, I think that the complete concept of ghosts is total hogwash! People who believe in such rubbish are perfect candidates for "blindly following the rules of religions & cultures", aka "sheep".

I would also add that 'ghosts' are a part of Thai/Buddhist religion. .

Animism has mixed with Buddhism and other Religions all over the planet! See Nepal, Tibet, Sikkhim, Bhutan, India...Christianity and Vodoo..

And for the "rest" of it see "Myth Busters"!

and it's "Father, son and holy SPIRIT!" not "ghost"

in case of attack - call "the ghost busters!"

Well you see Farangs have no soul. That's why you don't see Farang ghosts in Thailand. (And also explains why they do not know how to dance....)

...Just joking of course.

Actually there have been sightings of Farang ghosts following the Tsunami:

http://www.cdnn.info/news/industry/i050120.html
well I am Atheist. So no Jesus for me....

But what I don't understand.

Ghosts exist in the Buddhist beliefs....understand that

asking if anyone know that ghosts did any harm....everyone told me NO

Asking if they think the dead grandmum would do any harm if she would be alive: NO

So I don't understand why they are afraid...why are ghosts dangerous and not friendly ghosts???

I would say a lot do.

But not all.

The MIL has an apt complex, and sadly a person was murdered in it. (the guy was never cought.... imagine that)

Any how, it is a great building, nice complex, quality etc. But it averages about 2% occupancy after the murder. Before it was 100%.

Sometimes people move in, hear about the ghost/murder and then come yelling demanding their deposit back and they move out.

So that is something to think about for those that want to "invest" in rental properties.

Most thai belife in superstition, and rituals.

I know some people that don't believe in ghost, but they are scare to watch scary ghost movie.

When it comes night time that's when they get scare. They tend to label ghost as a bad thing.

I know lots of people who believe a guy named Noah built this really big boat........
