Hi

My wife and two stepchildren have just been granted Naturalisation as British Citizens(At long last after failing 3 years ago but that’s another story of the Home Office being unreasonable I think they are better now)

I need some advice my wife has my surname on her naturalisation certificate and Thai Passport but the children have my wifes maiden name on their naturalisation certificate and Thai passport.

I want to apply for their British Passports and have the childrens surname changed by deed poll to match ours before I apply. I have spoke to the Thai embassy about renewing their Thai passports that run out soon and they have told me that if I change their surname in the UK Thai law wont recognise it . So I want to know if anyone has been in this situation because I don’t want to change their names and cause problems with their identity if they decide to return when they are adults for instance. They are all ready known by my surname at School and at football etc etc so I would like to change it.

Regards Kevin

I see no harm in changing the children's surname by deed poll and them having British passports in your name and Thai passports in your wife's maiden name.

Scouse.

OK Thanks I thought that myself but so many people had told me conflicting things I just wanted reassuring.

My first daughter has her mothers maiden name on her Thai birth cert, I changed her name to mine and she has now Thai and Brit passports in my surname.

We had to change her name by deed poll and she has her new name in my wifes tambien bahn also.

We use her Thai passport for travel in and out of Thailand.

This was about 3 years ago and she has had a passport renewal recently(Thai) without any question from the authorities.

She kept her Thai christian name by the way......."Naphassawan".

Thanks for the info.I will also be keeping their Thai fornames(Kritsada and Chomphoonut ) as I am not seeking completely westernise them as they will always speak Thai and English and learn about both cultures.

Thanks
