Just a bit of information for those members who live in Oz with their wives.

There are 520 hours of TAFE education available to the holders of a 309 Spouse Provisional Visa, this was never revealed to us in any of our dealings with offficialdom.

Subjects available are,

English (from basic conversational to advanced, is assessed by TAFE Tutor)

Driving License

Australian Citizenship

There is also help available for any children of your spouse, our son goes to a specialist language school in Adelaide and I'm sure the scheme would operate Australia wide.

It is a Federal Scheme Bronco, so it is available all sorts of places around the country. ( where there are TAFE Colleges )

Yes I know the scheme for Spouse is federal Doc, but for the child we had to get approval from the SA goverment, other wise it was full fees for him and that amounted to a lot of dough.

The approval in SA is granted by

International Student Program

International Education Services

Dept of Education and Childrens services

So I was assuming there would be a similar situation interstate

Bronco;

Its under the AMEV scheme. If you look at the TAFE and evening colleges, you will see it.

Its not bad, my ex-wife had alot of input into it. ( So for me to praise anything she has done....)

hi bronco

my wife did the free hours when she first arrived..having a bit of good luck..the place where they had the free classes in sydney..near where i live closed down..so instead..my wife got the free hours at the local university..this was a very intense 5 day a week coarse..and she has reaped the awards..

just an opinion..telephone the office in your city and find out where you can attend the free classes..and try and find out which is the best place....after the 520 hours are up..if your spouse wants to learn more..most english tafe coarses are free

I made enquiries for my wife. Taking her back to Australia over summer.Even backwards old Hobart TAFE offers free classes for my spouse . I imagine great way for them to meet other Thais, or(god forbid) other Asians.

Our situation was opposite to yours 350, we met other Thai's and found out about the TAFE courses from them.

How did you guys find out about the free lessons?

Posted

we found out through the internet...called the free english centre..they told us where the closest one was to where we lived..went there the following week..my wife got interviewed to see which class she would go into..and started about 2 weeks later..

another point..we got told by one of the teachers..as long as you have available hours left..you can have a tutor come to your house ..for an hour..one time .one week..

Bronco, made a few calls and visits to the local TAFE when back in Aussie for a few weeks. Had the intention of paying fees, no worries, but was told it was free, sweet. My other half will start lessons in the new year so will see what happens . :o
