Air-conditioning

• The owner of Meedee (K. Muan) is the eldest son of K. Amnuay of Amnuay Motor Air. Both perfectionists. Amnuay Motor Air focuses more on air-conditioning (car and home) but offers window tinting (custom built contained workroom at Amnuay2) and in-care entertainment as well. Amnuay have just opened their very comfortable 2nd branch on the superhighway on the side heading towards the mountain nearly opposite Carrefour. http://www.amnuaymotor.com

• Lana or L'Analytic Water Work Ltd. They have an office almost opposite Rajaphat University, as it is now, on Chotana Road (a bit north of the uni.) Full address: 219/6 Changpeuk Rd. Telephone 053 410 182-3.

They have a good reputation and know a lot about water quality in many locations but can be expensive because they want to really be sure to get it right. They will send a man out and give you a detailed bid if you just phone them.

RECOMMENDATION:-

My last couple of visits to this new place that just opened on the superhighway road about 500 metres away from carrefour towards lampang. Right after the ESSO petrol station. superb service. BRAND NEW SHOP. not the cockpit shop near makro or the shop at Makro.

For tires/batteries/brake/alignment/oil change I have been using the place shown below near Lotus. Used them for 12 years and found service and pricing to be very good. A lady manager who is very responsive and directs the team of technicians like a traffic cop. :o I believe it has a big Goodyear sign in front.

Haengsawat, between the superhighway and the train station, on the right side as you approach the superhighway, has always provided good wheel and tire service for me. They hand-tighten the lug nuts and use torque wrenches to finish them off. And they stock good stuff like stainless valve stems. They do computerized 4-wheel alignment too. Quick and efficient.

I've been a customer of the Goodyear located a couple of hundred yards east of Montri Hardware on the westbound frontage road of the first northern ring road. I've had only good experiences there and when they quote a price it is inclusive of all needed services (rotation rebalance)for the life of the tire. Sorry to hear of your experience. I'll avoid the place mentioned and will encourage others to do so as well.

2 strong recommendations. On the south side of the moat and inside the moat, almost opposite the 1st U-turn from the top of Seedonchai, is a place with a huge Michelin billboard. Excellent service & value for money & just enough English to get by. Part-worn tyres always available for impecunious farangs and seelors!

As you leave the 'superhighway' on the 118 (signposted Doi Saket and Chiang Rai) the first big tyre place on the left is 'Goodyear' in big letters. Big, professional and well informed. Showed me I had incorrect (thus unsafe) wheelnuts on my (then recently bought) 2nd hand car and replaced them instantly and cheaply. And the wet season so far has shown the Goodyear Aquatred tyres on the front to be brilliant.

What about Builders, Handymen. Lawn Mowing/Garden Services, Carpenters, Patio Laying Services ?

Questions asking for these kind of services crop up quite a lot so if anyone has any personal recommendations maybe it's worth posting them?

Recommendation: Locksmith

Sanga Locksmith, 0816 690 515 or 053 329 689

Email [email protected]

It's a small hole in the wall shop in Nong Hoi between the Holiday Inn and Mahidol Road, on the left travelling out of town. The owner speaks good English and did a prompt fuss free job when the safe in my apartment broke in locked mode. Trip across town, broke open the safe, dismounted it, took it to his workshop and installed a new lock, returned and re-installed it for 800 baht. Not super cheap but good value, I thought.

GENERAL BUILDER & DECORATOR

I have just used a builder (and his small team) to completely redecorate (interior and exterior of our house, fitting new kitchen (cement/tile etc), new doors, new tiling to patio area, , new door frames, fix leaks etc etc etc.

I am no novice to doing places up, used to do a lot in the UK, so I know good workmanship when I see it. The work has been very good and am impressed at the work that has been done, especially the tiling/flooring.

This guy is intelligent, honest and reliable and produces a worksheet for the whole job detailing what is included, what is not included.

Only downside is that he does not speak English.

I will make a note of that guys name. Thanks. Very useful. For small handy man works sound great. I need my garage painting.

For any form of building works I have always used Kensington. Garden walls, house builds, extensions etc. They did my first home and it was done very well. A friend recommended them to me . I then found myself recommending them to several expat Chiang Mai residents and all are very pleased with the work and the homes they have built. One of them even won the Conde Nast international award so must be pretty good :)

Kensington are not the cheapest or the most expenisve, but without doubt, they are the best. I always tell anyone in Thailand always avoid the cheap route anyways. It is just a disaster waiting to happen. Cheap means cheap here in every aspect. Kensington are quality at fair prices. Very good value for money. They take all the hassles and worries away from the person who wants to build a home. We all know the problems that can occur here and these guys stop you from experiencing that. In the long run you actually save money. They understand the higher standards expats expect and want. They also help save you money, give excellent advice and help you every step of the way. I was over the moon with my house. Dealt with a few others companies, but it was either a problem with being able to trust them to do it right, or there was no level of quality, or simply the standard of workmanship was not there with the others. Kensington really did what they said they would and were happy to come back and help if anything needed correcting. Wonderful service and very nice people. Honest and experienced. Graeme who is kensington''s main construction guy was a top guy. Very kind and giving of his time.

There web site is www.chiangmaibuilders.com Try and them and see for yourselves.

Another motorcycle ("big bike") shop that should be mentioned is the Piston Shop, at 49/3 Assadatorn Road.

Walking distance from the city centre, and phone number 08 1952 4433.

The owner, Watit ("Nat"), speaks English fluent, knows his things, and appears to be

used by many, both Thai and us foreigners.
