Hello!

I'm going on a Visa Run with my partner next week and we would like to use this trip to do some sightseeing (we drive with our car). I heard the next border is Cambodia. Can anyone recommend places to stay or some interesting places we could visit on our way to the border? Is Cambodia the only option or how long does it take to reach the border in Burma? We also plan to stay a night somewhere.

Any suggestion would be awesome!

The border with Myanmar is at Ranong and can be crossed and back same day. Don't konw about sightseeing in that part of the world.

Going to the Cambodian border (Poipet?) I don't think there's much of interest to see unless you head further North into Surin and see some old Khmer ruins there.

The Khao Yai area may be of interest to you? It's only a little detour on the way back to Bangkok I think. I play golf so usually stop overnight at Royal Hills and have a couple of rounds.

Laos is brilliant but i think about 10 hours drive from bkk, hat lek approx 4 hours from bkk, border of cambodia/thailand near trat is prob not a bad option, there are 2 more slightly nearer but not mutch to see.

hat lek on the coast gives many options of staying a little longer if needed, koh samet can be reached on way down as can koh chang, both nice little islands, you go throughth trat nice town shopping etc then hat lek, you can cross the border there and stay the night in koh kood or koh kong not sure 100% that side as i havent done it but its on coast and is a main stayover point for falangs traveling further on into cambodia!

now i dont know if this is going to be awesome enough for you, so here's a map that is!

http://map.longdo.com/?lat=11.709389648437...0&locale=en

centre of map should come up where hat lek is, then zoom out to see bkk etc, top right is to change thai to english

have a good one

Thanks so far! Chris your option sounds great. I wanted to visit Koh Chang since some time. Can anyone recommend hotels near the border? My girlfriend is a bit concerned about staying in "hotels that look like ghosthouses". She thinks that only good hotels can be found in tourist areas but I doubt it.

theres hotels of all prices all around, so you no problems there, you really need a battle plan of where and if so how many nights you need/want away and where before any recomendations are gonna be any good to ya!

at i guess lets say ya did this

mon 6am set off down to coast off koh chang (forgot name) for say 10am (car ferry) over 11.00am arrive koh chang, lots hotels (probobly 100 all along coast) your g/f can just pick one and now its not high season she will get a good deal!

stay for 2 nights (more or less) wednesday leave koh chang on say 8am ferry arrive back mainland 9am trat 10am (max) hat lek border with cambodia 11 am walk intto cambodia and out paperwork and maybe some food/ drink 12 miday gives you a nice 4 hour drive back to the big apple!

these times are rough estimates, but a good guide, youve done ya visa and had a small break away, you could cut out koh chang and stay at border, save you a night thats all but you would miss an amazing place ill pm you a link with some picture's and idea of costs etc
