I have a hard time understanding why AIA (that I currently use) will only give 3rd class insurance just because my car, Honda, is a bit older....(more than 10 years). What is the logic behind that? And can Thaivisa-insurance help with getting something closer to a typical 1st class insurance? (could be with deductable or whatever). Cheers!

That's because good quality replacement parts are much more difficult to obtain. You may be able to get Class 2 coverage, though. (fire & theft only - without coverage for damage to the body).

If your car is less than 15 years old, you can now also get a form of 3rd Class coverage that gives you the options of Collision coverage, or Fire & Theft coverage, or a combination of Collision and Fire & Theft coverage.

There are a couple of companies that will probably sell you 1st Class coverage, but the coverage I just mentioned above is much cheaper and much more practical for an older car.

Yes, we can help you. For vehicles under 15 years we can offer 2 + 1 which is Third Party, Fire & Theft plus an agreed amount for your vehicle if involved with another vehicle – quite reasonable premiums !

So if you get a policy like this on a 14 year old car, will they drop you when it turns 15?

Also, with this policy, can you get your car repaired at the dealership garage?

Are there any options for collision coverage on a car over 15 years old?

I insured my car on its 14th year with Thaivisa 2+1 AXA like he said, then I was renewed for 15th year without hassle; not dropped. AXA has very good call center service, from my experience.

However, just in case you do get dropped in the future, SCB Bank offers "Special 3rd Class" insurance for any age car for only 7,000. Your car will be insured for theft and damage (but not for electrical fire) for 100,000 baht, plus third party property damage 1 Million plus third party liability for injury up to 10 Million (1 million per person), plus more...

Thaivisainsurance, that sounds good: is that 2+1 with AXA or whom? And you you specify the cover (damage on own car? to what level?) Cheers!

AXA is one of several companies who offer 2 +1

As for the level of coverage, that obviously depends to a certain extent on the age of the vehicle.

Different companies different underwriting criteria

…………………and for 'up country' there is a very good reason why fire coverage is necessary

Thank you JunkofDavid.

Yes we can indeed now off the 2+1 insurance for vehicle up to the age of 20 years - good news for many :)

ThaiVisa Insurance

Reviving this thread as really want to get my old bat of a car back on the road :)

So, can you still insure a 17 year old Honda with something more than basic 3rd class insurance and what would that be? Cheers!

Hi TV-insurance,

so my 1993 Honda 1.6L old bat would be able to get what from AXA (I like their free road side service add-on - and their service when I had them before was good).

I prefer cover for fire/theft as well as at least SOME cover for damage (limited to collision w. other vehicle only - but prefer if not limited by that naturally).

If not AXA do you have another option that will accept my above car with more than just standard 3rd class? Heard LMG will - and in this thread Siam Commercial Bank was also mentioned.

Cheers!

Sorry Firefan but one has to start the insurance before 15 years - see junkofdavid2 above. At 17 years 3rd Class is your option.

This may be a silly question, but...

is it possible to get car insurance that is just car (fire/theft/damage) and 3rd party insurance? i.e. not "life and injury of the driver" which is me and I already have adequate coverage for that.

Just want to be insured at a reasonable cost in case car is stolen or totalled...

(it's an 8 year old Honda BTW)

??

Sorry it is not possible just to take out 'life and injury' of the driver as (apart from they are all standard packages) the insurance is for the vehicle not the insured in Thailand.

I was asking the opposite...whether it is possible to get insurance on only the vehicle and not the driver.

I think that's a very interesting question.

I currently have health and accident insurance through my employer and also a private plan that I purchased. Why should I also have to pay for it on my car insurance?

Sorry no is the answer - these are standard packages and to start swapping parts in or out would end up costing you more in premiums.

So what does 2+1 actually cover..

If my wife drives into another car, and its her fault..

The other car is covered ??

Her car is covered (to only 100 ??) ??

If theres no other car involved ??

I am making the assumption that if the other driver is at fault all claims and all damage falls to them on their policy anyway.

Car Insurance For Car Older Than 10 Years AIA will only give 3rd class insurance

unfortunately that is correct. obviously i can't get a better than 3rd class insurance for one of my cars which is 20 years old but valued at 2 million Baht :(

Exactly, you start looking at Mercs or beemers or other nice imports and its very easy to find cars with a mil plus value and yet hitting the 10 year mark.

Is there no specialists who handle these ?? I mean do multi million baht porsches really drive round with no insurance ??

2+1 covers Third Party, Fire & Theft + if you are in an accident with another vehicle (your fault or theirs) your damage will be paid for - as well as theirs. The amount of cover is what is agreed between you and the insurance company at time of application.

If no other vehicle involved e.g. you drive off the road into a wall, then you pay - otherwise it would be full 1st Class !

Other party at fault then yes, they pay.

Vehicles up to 15 years can usually be insured 2+1 and then on to 20 years on application.
