Internet Service

What satellite provider to you recommend in the Loei area? (about 65k NE from Loei in the mountains). Can throw a stone over to Laos. This would be for internet and phone and I know the providers are limited.

Thanks

I live about 50 kilometers south of Muang Loei. There is no land line available and I used Shitstar (Ipstar) for more than three years. To say it really stinks would be a compliment. I told TOT to come and get their junk after they told me that if I didn't like their service to have it taken out. I now use both AIS and Dtac GPRS EDGE. Both are better than the expensive satellite dish service I had. AIS sometimes works great and sometimes it stinks too. When that happens, I change to the Dtac SIM card and between the two the service is not too bad. I have a good EDGE capable phone and use a data cable or Bluetooth to connect to my computer. The service is cheaper and better than Shitstar.

Hi tsocr

I too live in an area of Issan where land lines are not an option. I have CAT CDMA (no dish, just a tabletop box). Its OK and rarely crashes even in bad weather conditions BUT its a shade faster than dial-up and no where near to Broadband speeds. Its a lot better than nothing and one gets used to making do. Its 850b per month BTW and the initial outlay was around 8500 (I think).

CAT has CDMA EVDO. It's a great system and pretty fast. I was all set to buy the expensive modem and subscribe to the service. Right before I was ready to buy, I read an article in the Bangkok Post that said CAT was going to eliminate the CDMA service and replace it with 3G. There was also a long thread in the TV Internet forum.

If I were you, I'd check to see how long CAT is planning to continue service. I decided not to take a chance since GPRS EDGE is working pretty well for me.

I have used CAT's CDMA service in Kalasin for two months now and experienced few problems. Download speeds of 850 to 1050, and uploads of 63 to 83, based of Thaivisa's Speedtest. The modem purchase price was a shock at 11,000 baht for a USB device the size of ciggarette lighter, but the monthly fee of about 800 baht is reasonable. All in all, it's better and faster than my TT&T Maxnet land line service in Pattaya, which is the same cost and rather unreliable. It was once out of service for 6 days, yes, days.

Thank you for the info. I am being told that TOT is the only service out by me which I find hard to believe.
