I have a 14 year old stepson who elected to join the monkhood and is currently being educated in a temple school in Surin. He's expressed an interest in leaving and wants to go to a technical school and presumably lead an ordinary life.

I and his mother are concerned that he will fall into bad ways but at least in his home village near Surin he is surrounded by his extended family - we are in the UK for another 2-3 years before returning to LoS for good.

Is there such a thing in Surin as a premier fee paying secondary school which has a reputation for what may pass for excellence? I know you can lead a horse to water and all that but I would like to try and give the lad the best start available.

Which is the best government school?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi damocletian

We live just outside Surin and I'v just explained your question to my Thai wife. She said straight away the best 'paying' school IHHO is Saw Saw School (speelink). I know its on the south side of Surin as I used to give a lift to a younger student there. All students seem to be very well dressed and very respectful. I am sorry I cannot be any more specific but hopefully your local relatives can check it out.

Good luck mate

I understand that there is a technical school / college in Surin that is well thought of by many Thais. Two of my wife's cousins, one a boy and the other a girl, are both attending this school. For sure they get a technical qualification when they graduate. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the school / college but it is located on the main Buriram - Sanka road, same road as Big C, Tesco, and Makro, and a couple of hundred meters east of the main Police Station.

This may be of help to others.

My research so far has identified 3 schools to be recognised as perhaps the best available.

1. Sirindhorn.

2. Surawittayakarn ( this is the one I think Dave's wife identified as Saw Saw, the popular acronym used).

3. Weerawatyothin.

These, according to a thesis produced by a university Phd student, were the top 3 measuring student performance and parents' satisfaction.

Typically, the first 2 have mostly girls since the fairer sex are almost inevitably more academically inclined than Thai boys. The 3rd I think is an all boys institution and has a military ethos ensuring sound discipline.

I think we are inclining towards 3 .......Beating the crap out of the little buggers can be so character forming :o but my instincts tell me the lad will want to go to the "techno" in which case I am grateful for the above info.
