Hi Guys,

Wonder if anyone can help. I need a hernia repair, I know it is a Hernia because I had one before (on the other side). I am currently based in Vietnam and quite frankly don't trust the 'top' hospitals expertise in medical matters or the countrywide and industry wide practice of daylight robbery.

I am coming to Thailand, does anyone know what the process is to get a hernia repair done? I am planning to come back to Thailand on the 23/24/25th July and ideally would like everything done and be fit to travel back to Vietnam after about three weeks.

In the UK I was in and out in one day and needed a recovery time of about 10 days.

Does anyone know what the standard practice is in Thailand - from initial consultation to OP? Is it standard paractice to keep the patient in hospital for 5 days? How much does it cost?

Thanks for any suggestions

Ritchie,

i had a hernia(left side) operation 4 years ago at the bangkok/pattaya hospital. They treated me like royalty and i stayed one night. The operation went very well and i was up and walking in 2 days and the pain subsided after about 5 days.I think this op cost about 100,000 baht but my private medical company paid. The cost would have been reduced if i had to pay myself, they bumped the cost up because a medical insurance company were paying. There are good hospitals here and cheaper, namely queen sirikit hospital at sattahip, near rayong.

Have you thought of getting a private medical plan, leaving your op for a couple of months then telling the insurance company you slipped in the shower.Pm me if you need directions.

I had a hernia operation done at the Bumrungrad hospital in BKK last year (rated as the best in Thailand).

The doctor was Dr Avtar (check his details on their website)

Operated on the afternoon and got discharged the following morning after the doc did his rounds and the bill was prepared. I was quoted 90K and only paid 79K. Was given good pain killers which were needed for approx 5 days. As i live in Pattaya the doc said that i could go to any local clinic to have the stiches removed if i didn't want to travel to BKK (my wife done it!)

Very happy with the doctor and hospital services unlike the ones here who over charge and over subscribe meds even if not required.

Hope this is of help

Back in 1983 and again in 1990 had hernias done by the cut & sew method, rather longer recovery period, not at all as "comfortable" as the laparoscopic method.  These at the old Bangkok Nursing Home, before the new high  rise hospital was built on the site, sad....

I had a gall bladder removed last year, with stones, easy job via laparoscopic method, at Vibhavadi Hospital,  good place, would go back again.  Good surgeon, too, info below.

I had mine done in a rural Buriram hospital about 18 months ago cost 10,000 Baht, including 2 nights in a private room. No problems.

Hi Coventry, #

Cheers for that. Could you give me some info on how rural it was? I have been to some hospitals in Issan and they have cats and dogs running around - is it acceptable by western standards ie. Cleanliness etc. 10000 is a superb price - how long from consultation to OP?

Cheers

I had it done at Nang Rong government hospital. Nang Rong is on route 24 approx 100 k East of Korat. I had the consultation and had the op a few days later. They only do operations on certain days of the week. They don't knock you out, for some reason, they do an epidural. Meaning they just make your lower half numb. There was no stitches to remove post op and I'm happy with their service. Yes they have cats running around the hospital grounds, no dogs, but they keep the rats down. Over all, the hospital was/is very clean and they're just finishing a large extention. I highly recommend it. Only warning I can give is that when they shave you be aware. They shaved me from the bottom of my rib cage down to my knees. I haven't been able to fathom out why.
