Hi All,

I am hoping to bring my Thai wife to the UK on a Eea family permit.

I have have lived in the UK since birth, and have recently received an Italian passport, in addition to my British one.

My questions are, is there a limit on the time she can stay here,

and is she allowed to work while shes here?

Thanks in advance.

I assume there is a reason why you re opting for this route of entry to the uk rather than simply appliying for a spouse visa

for your wife?

As you already hold a british passport I think that in your position I would go for the spoue visa as it starts the ball rolling

for her to secure a british passport eventually and the security that it provides for her long term future..

I am of course aware of a few possible reasons as to why a uk citizen who was raised in the uk might choose to apply for a passport from another country.

Anyway in answer to your question, yes your wife would be able to obtain a National Insurance Number in order to enable her to work in the uk if she entered the uk on an Eea family permit.

I understand that the Family permit is initially issued for 6 months after which time it can be extended to up to a maximum of 5 years.

The family permit itself is valid for an initial six months, but the holder does not require permission to stay in the UK beyond that date providing that s/he remains construed as a family member of an EEA national. However, if no further permission is sought and the holder wishes to travel outside of the UK after the family permit has expired, they should obtain a new one prior to their return.

Alternatively, as Roy mentioned, the holder of a family permit, once in the UK, can make an application for a residence permit, also free of charge, which is valid for five years. At the conclusion of the five years, they can apply for permanent residence, and having held PR for one year, they can apply for naturalisation as a British citizen.

Scouse.
