I have pakistani and indian friends back in the uk and have been speaking to them about an authentic balti house and they are doing some homework for costings.

If there was a realy good one here would anybody use it,as maybe i could manage/oversee the place.

If you did a search on the numerous thai and pattaya forums for Indian restaurants I think you will find there is a great deal of interest in trying to find a good UK style Indian restaurant in Pattaya.

There are a number of INdian restaurants here but none that could be called good UK style Indian food, there are some which are just too bland with hardly any spicyness at all and then there are others which tend to be thai orienatated and way too spicy with even the chicken tikka being too hot to eat.

If you could get a restaurant going with Indian chefs who have succesfully catered for the British tastes it would have winner written all over it. Though a word of warninng if you are expecting the expat crowd (propaly would be your main clients) to fork out UK prices then it probably will fail, the prices would have to be relative to the costs in Thailand. Chicken dishes for example would have to be a lot cheaper than the equivalent chicken dishes back home as chicken is so cheap over here. Then on the other hand Lamb wich is expensive you could probably get away with UK or even slightly higher prices.

Guess it boils down to that you really need to know your market.

Also you should sign up with the 2 food delivery services that we have in Pattaya Door 2 Door and Waiters on Wheels as a lot of your custom would come from expats who just want to have the food delivered to their door and eat at home.

Good luck and keep us informed if this becomes a starter. ooh for a UK style Indian in Pattaya, here's hoping.

It would fail, not enough Brummies in Pattaya to make such a business pay.

I would love it, if it was the real deal, real spicy, and fairly priced. So, I know I am weird, so its probably a very bad investment. Drats. I want the balti!

BTW, I never noticed a Balti house in the USA. Certainly none in the SF bay area when I lived there. I don't really understand why not as balti is so good. Perhaps there are some in New York, but I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't. That might be a clue that Balti doesn't export well from the UK, as the US embraces most any foreign cuisine. I am guessing most non-UKers have never even tried it or even know what it is.

BTW, Ali Baba here serves one or two dishes in a Balti style pan, but they don't claim it is authentic Balti so I am assuming it is not. Anyone tried it and care to comment? I was only there once for a thali and don't like their cooking style very much of their standard Indian food.

No one mentione Neeroy's yet?

They have so-called Balti dishes on their menu, but it is absolutely not proper Balti (or any other Indian / Anglo-Indian food).

I would welcome a good UK-Indian restaurant, but you need to research your market and also get the right location. friend of mine tried a few years back with a place behind Yensabai Condo complex - the food was good, the customers - zero.

The right food in the right location with the right publicity / marketing exposure and you could make a killing (or go under).

Good luck if you try - and let me know - 'cos I'll support it when I'm home.

Neeroy's Indian food is awful. I guess it is cheap enough not to complain, but really, it is awful. Did I mention their food is awful? Just checking.

INdian restaurants are not doing well because of the lack of quality in the indian establishments here in Pattaya. I have tried most and they are well quite awful when compared to a decent Brit style Indian.

IMO if somebody can get some Brit indian chefs and make Brit style food in the right location in Pattaya then it would be a hit with both the expat and tourist communities.

I've been to Ali Baba many times and their food is OK but not great and the consistency is very hit and miss though I beleive they are one of the better Indians eateries in Pattaya which I guess really shows how poor the quality is here when Indian restaurants are concerned.

There is a new Indian restaurant opened on Beach road called Spices which I haven't tried yet, hopefully this one will be better.

Not so true mate, Neeroys curry is very close to what you would get in an average Uk Curry house.

cant say for the rest of the food he sells , never tried it, but the chicken Vindaloo is not bad .

go try it .

But please don't go around there with any free, out of date food, tokens cut out of any of the pattaya comics.

not a good idea.

Have a nice day mate

You went back to Ali Baba s a few times. Think you have a few issues with the old tase buds mate. that place is one of the worst in pattaya.

let alone the indian taylors hanging around out side. What a joke.

We beg to differ - Neeroy's food is the left-overs from Ali Baba - and I have very little creditable to say about Ali Baba!

I have tried half-a-dozen different dishes in Neeroy's, trying to find out why several people on the Pattaya Forum were saying how good it was. Now I sit in Crazy Dave's watching the empty tables in Neeroy's (or watching "Only Fools and Horses" for the five hundredth time)

Flame me for being racist if you like, but as much as I like a good vindaloo, I wouldnt set foot in an indian restaurant in pattaya due to getting so hacked off at the indian tailors hassling me every time I walk past their shops! I mean come on, I am covered in tattoos, have my head sheared at the sides with tattoos on the sides of my head...do I really look like I will buy one of their suits?!?! <deleted>!!!

I am not an expert on UK curries but please realize you do not have to be British to have a notion of what is good Indian food. I never had anything so bad there as at Neeroys. I stand by my pan of that place. As far as coupons, mate, YOU COULDN'T PAY ME TO EAT THERE! I did give them a chance, tried their Indian grub on two different occasions. I got the distinct impression that even they know it is bad.

I agree the overall standard of Indian food in Pattaya is very bad, not to mention, very overpriced (excepting cheap and very bad Neeroys). Also curious about that new place in Beach Road. Any reports?

Anyone have any reports on the new Spices indian restaurant on beach road ?

Seems like the OP has lost interest in this thread and the Balti house idea was just another Pattaya dreamer.....oh well.
