Falang And Thai Unmarried Couple With Baby On The Way.

Featured Replies

My thai gf is expecting our baby in a couple of months and she has told me that before the baby is born that if I want the baby to have my surname then we have to go to her village to visit the local amphur to sign some paperwork so that the baby will legally have my surname.

Does anyone have any experience of this ?

What is the paperwork that I will be signing ? It will be all in thai apparently and I get very uneasy at signing things when I don't know what I'm signing.

Is it true that if this paperwork is not signed then the baby is only legally allowed to have the mothers surname ?

I thought it would all be done after the baby's born ? but my gf's insistent that it needs to be done before the birth and that it has to be done at her amphur.

If I have to sign something can it not be done in Pattaya (where we live) or BKK ? Don't really want to trudge all the way to Isaan just to sign a piece of paper.

Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide :o

Unless there are new rules, nothing you were told is true.

We were not married, I was not even there when our baby was born (Samitivej Hospital), they asked me to fax the picture page of my passport and the baby has my surname. They organized birth certificate, the original and English translation, laminated picture of the baby and print of her hand and feet in framed clay.

Edit: furthermore, in my wife's house papers our daughter is with my surname. The papers were updated in May 2004. We married long after that.

It looks like she is taking you down to path to being legally married...if that is what you want, go ahead.

Congratulatiosn on the baby :o

It sounds like she is trying to get you into a shotgun marriage. :D Seriously though, there is no requirement to sign anything at the ampur & many of the dads here are unmarried to their thai partners & the kids have dads name & dad is named on birth certifiate.

I would ask her to specify exactly what it is that she thinks you should be signing & who told her about it as it is either a trick to get hitched or someone in her village/one of her freinds has been filling her head with nonesense. Maybe also mention that getting married will not be possible as you would have to get a freedom to marry document from your embassy & stamped by the MFA in Bangkok, in case that was what she was hoping for :D

If you do want to get married then go the the local Amphur office in Banglamung. On Sukhumvit, next to the police station and before he SAHA chicken farm.

You can do the marriage there. :D:o
