Some how Windows Defender suddenly poped up saying there was a threat........

It disabled everything.....

I put in Search config and then got it all back, but it keeps doing it...

I run Vista, well have duel boot so am using XP at the moment...

4 days on in Vista it starts fine loads everything, click on anything and everything goes leaving the desktop with just the picture of my dogs. all the folders and the bottom bar is no longer there..

Please what can I do?

I find that Microsoft Defender is sort of built in and you cannot stop it, or can you?

The problem came about with iwin.com/games.. defender says in 'Malware'

I have iwin games on XP partition with no problems, iwin games most are for XP + Vista

I am used to Vista and it is so much faster then XP, so any help please on what to do

I thought that Windows Defender wasn't free any more, but I read an article on it recently that said it WAS free, so I installed it again and it is running with no problems.

To disable it, you could go to System Configuration Utility, Startup Tab and uncheck "MSASCui". But I would definitely NOT do that if I were you, since it appears to have found some malware - which is what it is supposed to do.

OR, you could go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and remove it that way: but don't do it!

So don't blame Windows Defender for the problems - it is the malware that you need to get rid of.

You could try restoring your system to an earlier configuration using System Restore, but it depends on how long you've had this problem and whether you have a restore point for before that time.

Hopefully others can suggest ways of cleaning your system if the System Restore option is not a solution.

I suggest, for the future, you perform regular backups (system images) so you can get back to a working system if problems like this occur and you cannot fix them.

Best of luck.
