A letter in the Bangkok Post tells the tale of the local police now harrassing the Pattaya locals, as well as foreigners with their entertainment venue early closures. Seems they are chasing the vendors off the beach, either into the sea or into the road.

Now, we all know these people can be a nuisance mainly because there are so many of them. But I'm perfectly content to sit there in a deck chair and have my lunch brought to me by these people, with a nice cold beer also available near by. I've seen many, Thais and foreigners, buying from them.

These are poor people who have to carry their loads backwards and forwards on the sand in the blazing sun all day long, and I'd say let them be. Have there been complaints? Or is this another attempt to clean up and destroy the character of Thailand?

Do these people have licenses to sell? If not, perhaps they could be regulated to keep their numbers down a bit. But lets have none of this harrassment against people who provide a useful and harmless public service.

I agree let the food vendors on the beach be.

It's those ****s who stand outside the tailor shops who grab your hand as you go by and ask if you want a suit that they should be chasing into the sea!!

I happened to walk past the same shop 4 times in 2 days and I had 2 pr**ks groping for me hand each time.

Still things may change. The last time I went past I noticed a stall selling martial arts hand weapons about 4 meters up the road. Hopefully there will be a half cut skinhead who goes through my experience and grabs a chopper off the stall. :o

The Indian's are the worst for that, especially in Phuket.

I have never been grabbed by any of the indians, just learn to look past them. The $%$&$@ beach venders otoh, one after another, stop in front of you until they get your reaction, impossible to read a book or newspaper in peace. Anyway, once you know the better beaches just a few clicks outside Pattaya it's all a non-issue, no beach vendors there.

I agree the beach doesn't amount to much in Pattaya, the night time activities seems to be more alluring.

Good for a laugh for a couple of nights, three max. Much prefer it over Phuket actually.

I reckon Hua HIn beach has to be the worst one I've ever been on. It is a constant there. I was trying to have a conversation with the bloke sat next to me last time I was there but in the end we just had to give up on it because of the constant interuptions and head for a boozer instead!

You know the huge outdoor restaurant behind the Blues Factory? I say huge because it has a roof as high as an airplane hanger. They have the aquariums? Ok, does anyone stare at the cats that hang out under the tables? While you are eating and talking do you look at the cats? If you look at the cats they will come over. It's not what the cats do it's what you do. The vendors aren't cats but the situation is similiar.

Well said. It's hard when you grow up in a culture that teaches you it's rude to ignore someone but that's what's needed.

For years I tried ignoring the beach vendors by explicitly not looking up when they stand in front of your table. Other places, as Walking Street it is easy to walk past pushy vendors by ignoring them but not on the beaches around Pattaya. Again, as I said before, it's a non-issue now I've found the better beaches a little away from the beaten track.

I can confirm this, I spend a lot of time in Phuket, the Patong beach area is the worst part.

nobody with any sense sits on the beach in Pattaya or Jomtiem.

^ That would be about 9o% of this boards membership.

I don't visit Pattaya very often & when I do it's purely to perform voluntary work for those less fortunate than myself. I do not object to the beach vendors, in fact I respect them because they are doing their level best to make a buck using the mimited skills that they have. It sure beats prostituting yourself in some seedy Pattaya sex establishment. What I do object to most strongly are the fat middle-aged farangs who strut along the beach wearing speedos, yuck. It is these people that the local law enforcement officers should be running off the beach & out of town.

Well I'm not saying ignore a person but don't maintain contact. As long as you look at a person you leave the opportunity open for conversation. A few words like 'maybe tommorrow', smile and break it off. :o

wave your hand and speak at the same time, friendly (this is HONEST)

pronounce like:

MAE AUW KHAP (KHA if you'r a lady) and they'r off!

I tell you: IT WORKS! (and I'm coming to Th for more than 30 years)

in fact it means: no, thank you...that's all.

As Madsere I don't go to the beach in either Pattaya or Jomtien but to some quit place a short distance away...

It doesn't feel right though when I see the coppers chasing those vendors, taking away their wares in the back of their pick-ups and the leave these poor buggers at the side of the road without even saying a word to them!

Even though these vendors will be annoying to some people, they still try to earn a living in an honest way, without reverting to thievery or other much more nasty stuff...

Hassle these people a lot, and quite a few will get dissilusioned by getting busted again and again trying to make an honest living. If they don't have an alternative source of income they will turn against the system and end up making their living in an illegal way,

then we'll have robbed (or worse) instead of hassled beachbums !!!

As the moderators have let your insult of me 'go', I can only assume that it's ok to make such accusations about members on this message board. You say I look like a 'nonce' meaning one whom has abused children. I therefore suggest that you are the one who is a sick perverted paedophile for even thinking such thoughts & you should be ripped apart by wild dogs. If I don't receive an apology then I will continue to make such accusations against you & see if you like it.

Is it you , is that you Joe in the Photo? :D

I cannot see where I have called you a nonce-cake , I stated that the real Joe Strummer did not resemble one.

You, of course , are free to draw your own conclusions , I therefore find your outburst to be inline with most of your postings.

I demand an apology Joe.

Nonce - cake , not you , the chap next to you in the internet cafe... :o

Is it you Joe , in the photo?
