Try to test drive it at night. I had a friend who owned one. He got out once to check his headlights were working as they were so dim. He tried my Isuzu D-Max and bought one straightaway.

Make sure it has the new generation diesel. (Commonrail). The older Ford Rangers had a deserved reputation for being fuel guzzlers. The new generation diesels are very close to the economy leader Isuzu as far as fuel economy.

OK well thanks for the comments guys. but i already get the "my friend has one.......". as for headlights there are many things that can be done to improve that, some as simple as changing the bulbs rather than the truck.

I am hoping to get comments from people who have one or have owned one in the past.

the one i'm looking at isn't common rail as i can't afford the price. and I know older technology will not be as fuel efficient as a common rail.

I had one, that I kept 4 years

Only can say good things about it. Except for the comfort on the back seats (I had the 4 doors 4 X 4 version), but this is the same for every truck you can have.

Very cheap on maintenance.

who,me thank you for you response. was there any problems that you can think of. i know they are not the best on fuel but people i have spoken to tell me its about the same as older isuza, toyota etc.

The one i'm getting is a 4x2 supercab XL, ex company owned with full service history, 101,000 km and a rear canopy, 6mth warranty for 235,000baht with finance at 4.75% over 4 years which on looking seems cheap.

Thanks Allan

I drive a Ranger that I bought new in 2003. It's the 4WD open-cab model. Other than routine maintenance I've never had to do anything to it. Doing mostly highway driving, my mileage is about 10 km/ltr.

Some jerk stole my spare tire though. It's a shame since it was on the same type alloy wheel used with the four tires mounted on the truck.

I drive a 2005 Ford Ranger Hi-Rider (2500CC turbo diesel). Very reliable and the engine still looks like new. I had to change the remote access fuel cap cable - under warranty - and thats the only thing that failed. The headlights are superb, especially when you add the low-down fog lights on the unlit country roads. Fuel economy - about 11 kilometers to the litre under normal driving conditions. Nothwithstanding what other people say about brand name I love my Ford Ranger Hi Rider. As someone once said, Fords may rattle first but they also rattle longest. My next car (SUV) will be the Ford Escape even if the price tag is double the Ranger.

I had a 4-door 4x4 2001 which I bought in 2003 with about 70k on the clock. It's done around 150k now and no major problems.

Fuel consumption is bad (around half of my new Nissan Navarra), but I still like it. I think I am getting just over 400km on a tank, which is 55 or 60 litres, as far as I remember.

Little niggles are first gear is too low, so slow moving traffic is tough on the legs and arms. I drove an automatic for a while this year and when you are in a traffic jam it's so much easier. Turning circle is also not as small as the Nissan and it gives a cracking sound whenever I put it in full lock (that's prob'ly just mine though!). It's also a bit noisy, but I think the later ones have improved that.

Thanks again to every one. pretty much what i thought. and manjara the steering and engine where improved from the 2003 model year. also 2004 onwards have a more modern aircon control panel, the early one's all look like thay are retrofit (which they may have been).

i think i'm defo going to buy this one. once i get it i will post about the experience. the company i'm getting it from is one of the largest corperate leasing companies in Thailand and they have 200+ vehicles available. mainly Ford Ranger's 2004 2wheel drive, 2door(235.000) and 4 door (255.000) they advertise in Bangkok Post. company name is T.V.P part of the Thai rung company.

Pay a little extra ( 300.000 + ) and get the newer 06 on model, it is leaps and bounds ahead of the old model and secondhand represents great value, also look at the new shape Mazda BT-50, basically the same truck, GG,

GG i hear what your saying but 100,000 baht PLUS isnt just a little extra. i have a budget in mind and for many reasons want to stick to it.

this deal costs me only 20.000b down and about 5000b a month for 4 years. and i intend keeping the truck for about this time or maybe longer. a newer, more expensive car would not fit this budget.

thanks again for all the answers.

Many peaple turn Ford down, because it's a Ford. But basycly they are the same trucks like the Mazdas. They are all right. So far as i see the truck cost totally 260'k, so it's not expensive. Not neccessary to pay over a 100'k more for a noisy Isuzu.

Remember Ford and Mazda are the same, so parts are the same too.

I'd be interested in the Leasing company details, as I'm thinking about leasing a car through my company (thai). Rot gaeng though, I have enough pickups to be going on with!

hi torro in Thailand the interest is applied per year so 4 year loan 4.75 + to the amount 235,000 x 4 = 44,648 in interest. not to bad on a 2nd hand truck.
