Just wondering if there is a way to receive internet on my laptop when I am living in Surin. I will be living around 14 kms out of Surin. Is there a device such as a wireless modem I can purchase and receive internet this far out of Surin? If so how much do I pay for modem and plan?

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi

Firstly, are you sure you cannot get a phone line into your village/area?? If not you have a few choices :-

1. IPStar can be installed using a satellite dish but general consensus seems to be not good.

2. Use Mobile phone as modem.

3. CAT-CDMA (Surin office near to public Hospital) is available. I had this and modem costs around 4k(I think) and monthly charge was 980b.

My last trip I used AIS 1-2-Call EDGE with acceptable results. It happened to be a "NET SIM" which was preset for the internet plan, but you can also call in to AIS to have this added to any AIS SIM card. The NET SIM was set up with 30 hours of access time credit included in the price, bought at discount on EBay in the US from someone who had it but decided they couldn't use it before expiration.

EDGE is acceptable for E-Mail and patient web browsing. It will keep you connected to the world without much in the way of cost.

If I were in for a long stay and a land line were not available, I'd be happy with what I'm hearing about CAT CDMA.

Does anyone know if there is a coverage map for CAT CDMA available? Specifically Ubon/Phibun area.

As you're 14 kms outside Surin probably no TOT broadband available. I have 2 friends living in the jungle around 50 kms. o/s Nak Phanom and they tried sat dishes and AIS mobile connections - unreliable, slow and expensive. Now they are VERY happy with the CATNET desk-top phone which has a mobile number. 12 hours free calls and 12 hours per day good internet connection for less than 600/month. Equipment costs less than 4,000 and CAT have a map to decide if you need an aerial and what size.

I Had ipstar satellite for ages be for throwing it out was paying about 2,500 a month for it now use CAT CDMA item CCU -680 usb modem with a flash memory max3.1 mbps cost 13000 TB and 874 TB per month unlimited all in. C ost me a few bob extra which made it the 13000, as I had an antenna and cable to connect to my modem for my desktop old computer , but it states access on the go @ true broadband speed ,have been more than happy with it compared to ipstar , but a cheaper way would be to buy the nokia 3110 @ about 4,000 TB, I brought one and it was far better than my ipstar and quicker to , but not suitable for me as I tend to do a lot of downloading which is why I choose the CAT .

I've found CAT's CDMA (EV-DO) coverage to be very good. I've been online while traveling from Roi Et to Korat without any disruption. Also traveling to Mukdahan from Roi Et there are no disruptions with the exception of a 10km mountainous stretch. Works very good in Savannakhet, Laos as well. My impression is that CAT's coverage is very comprehensive (with the exception of the central region which is Hutch territory and the modem won't work there). I cannot speak for the Surin area but more than likely it will work. When I purchased the modem they said I could take it back for a full refund (same day only) if it didn't work from my house.

Check to see if CAT has an office in Surin. I've been here for 3 years and have tried nearly all Internet services offered (TOT ADSL, TOT IPSTAR, TTT MAXNET and TRUE/DTAC/AIS (GPRS/EDGE)) and without doubt CAT CDMA is best for me (my ADSL lines tend to disconnect a lot or perform very slowly on overseas connections). To me faster speeds are not the most important thing anyway... but reliability and consistency (no big slowdowns) are important and CAT CDMA delivers on this.

I also just switched my mobile to the True Inter SIM (1 baht/min calls to USA) and their 250 baht/month unlimited GPRS plan. Their GRPS is too slow for a PC connection but when you have coverage it works great for email and rss feeds on your mobile.

Good luck!

Then you can keep up to date with the latest episodes.

Hey Thailand-fans :)

as my girlfriend is moving to Surin soon - I understood that she lives somwhere near main road between Surin and Chom Phra - I'd like to evaluate the availability of internet there because she's a bit afraid we may not keep close contact. Also I know she often needs internet for study and told that internet cafe, think in Surin, needs a motorbike ride everytime.

So as the last post is quite old my question again: Can you tell me which would be a cheap and reliable option for her? I'd hardly prefer a fixed (like DSL) line instead of mobile or sattelite. Also she just does some google, MSN, Skype, youtube and so on but no downloads so everything around 1 mbit would be enough. You have an idea about those costs today? Are fixed internet lines available around surin or is it just a small area around and then getting more and more difficult...?!

Thanks and regards,

Dennis

My girlfriend just called me and i asked for exact location. She sais from her house to Surin it's a bit more than 20 km and its 14 km to Kwaosinarin center. The location is a bit outside from that city to the east...

i'm soon to be about 40kms out of surin, looking at getting internet out there, if you can get a phone line out there wouldnt the adsl be the best option? and i'm guessing there is no chance of getting true vision or true internet? i want about 4-5mb connection if possible...any idea's?

Yes, ADSL is without doubt the best and cheapest option, but things are 'a bit hit and miss' with regard to telephone line installation. You need to check the area for existing subscribers (schools/wat/medical centres??)

I think true internet is only available in BKK and its definetly not in Surin, that I am sure of.

From reports from friends, It seems CAT-CDMA is the most stable/fast solution.
