You might say that Thailand's Chang Beer is hoarding gold. Gold medals that is. The smooth, crisp and full-bodied premium malt lager import recently picked up its second international gold medal in 2008. The most recent accolade was bestowed on Chang, the No. 1 Thai import in the U.S., by the acclaimed Beverage Testing Institute (BTI).

Chang earned an impressive 90 points in The 2008 World Beer Championships and was awarded a gold medal in the Pale Lager Division with an "Exceptional" rating by the Beverage Testing Institute judges.

BTI uses a proprietary blind tasting methodology developed by America's premier independent alcohol beverage review body. Six months earlier, Chang received a gold medal in the Beers, Water & Soft Drinks category at the prestigious MONDE SELECTION Bruxelles - World Selection of Quality 2008 in Vienna, Austria.

John Lennon, president of Chang Beer U.S. importer International Beverage USA, is thrilled with Chang's continuous run of back-to-back gold on a world stage.

Why do I get the sneaking suspicion we are not getting the same brew in Thailand!!! Has anyone tried the US brew out of a bottle, is the label idenitcal to the Thai, is down to the fine print!

I missed the peaty blen of sweat green apples and doughy pizza, that came two minutes before from Pizza Hut or was that The Pizza or.......... h3ll who cares!

In fact I don't recall "Chang tastes like crap" comments at all. Maybe "too strong, add some ice", but to "crap".

Draft Chang is easier to handle the next morning and it's easier to drink, too, but they obiously had only bottled beer in that competition.

I have been a beer lover for over 40 years, and love all kinds of beer, from Guinness, to English real ale, to the best of European lagers.

I first tried Chang in the early 90's, when it first came out, and I liked the flavour. It is a very good, tasty beer, which goes down extremely well when ice cold in a hot climate.

But I rarely drink it as it is just too strong.

Chang is there. Have a look at the 90 point entries.

Singha seems to have beaten Chang however with an impressive 91 points so unless this is out of date I have no idea how Chang is the gold medal winner, unless all beers above a certain score win a gold medal.

More to the point, where do they come up with these tastes? I am a beer drinker, preferring English real ale, German or Czech lagers and Belgian beers. I respect the opinions of Roger Protz or the late Michael Jackson but whoever came up with these tasting notes are just pretentious a**holes. Has anyone here ever experienced grilled mango, orange blossom honey, and Hawaiian bread toast aromas when drinking a beer?

Probably they did not compete, or at least not in that category of beer. If you browse that "organization's" web site you'll see positive things about quite a number of German beers, though mostly in other categories of beer. The Pale Lager category on that website seems to be a catch-all for the weak tasting, piss colored, mass market beers that sell for a cheap price in most countries. In the context of Thailand, think Singha, Heineken, Tiger, Chang, and the former Carlssburg; but exclude John Smith's, Warsteiner, Erdinger, Paulaner, Kilkenny, etc. Germany doesn't have a lot of internationally distributed beers in that category outside of Beck's, however they do have Heffewiessens, Pilsners, Dopplebocks and the like that score well on that website.

Something doesn't quite add up about that website though. It seems to just be a website run that solicits voluntary entries into "World Beer Champships" and then gives more than one of them a "Gold Medal" in each category. Press release such as the one from Chang follow, but yet there the organization that ran the contest doesn't seem to publicly release the results of the contest. Also, that website seems to seldom gives anything a bad review, just about everything has a "complex backbone and an aroma suggesting apples, banannas, and, subtle Salz hops".

It's predictable that any thread on ThaiVisa with the word "beer" or "pizza" in it will bring out the America haters. All that happened here Chang found a website run by unkown people and got a "gold medal" from them, and then Chang put out a press release. While it might be the case that America has committed unforgivable sins against you and that you have have the right to hate every last thing and person who comes from there, your animosity is misdirected in this case.

In my opinion, Chang is quite nice but, the quality varies. Normally it is alright - but at times you really get a bad bottle. Hmm.

I like Beer Lao and and Beer Leo better though.

As for the Gold Medal - You certainly find better beers among the Belgian, Chezch, English and German beers.

Angkor is the best lager in SEA.

My recollection is that it is the other way around. But then I haven't been in Cambodia for a few years, so my memory of it could be getting rusty.

I love the way everyone in Cambodia (even the English-speaking foreigners) pronounce Anchor Beer "ann-CHORR" to distinguish it from "Angkor".

They didn't. A website apparrently based in the US solicited entries into a "World Beer Championship", reviewed the entiries at their leisure, and then told a number of companies that they had won medals. You or I could run a World Beer Champsionship too, all you need to do is register a domain and be willing to drink and write about whatever beer people send to you.

I quite like a Chang - decent enough, however its a bit like drinking water though compared to the Orkney brew "Skullsplitter" i kid you not, 8.5% ABV , now thats for real Scottish Men!!!

After the Great Britain Beer Festival, in London, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer.

The guy from Chang sits down and says, "Hey bartender, I would like the world's best beer, a Chang." The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him.

And the joke was the guy from Stella. Amazing how their repeated victories at the World Domestic Abuse Festival have made them so cocky.

I thought that was a pretty over the to description too. Would this be better: "an unpretentious but hearty brew with a faint nose of urinal soap and of subtly diluted ammonium.”?
