Brit Faces Two Years In Thai Jail For Being 'rude'.

From what I see, he deserves everyday of that jail sentence. We are guests in this country.
:o

I have a used car I'd like to guilt you in to purchasing.

Exactly and please can I lick it clean for you becasue I am only a guest in this country! I have no rights and I have to jsut do everything I am told each day like a good little worthless person no matter how unfair it is. Heaven fobid I speak up as I will be quickly told that if I do not like it I should leave by lots of Thais and lots of wannabethais...

Enough heavy irony yet? :D

I once got pulled off my moving bicycle from behind - and found myself surrounded by a group of six or seven serious plainclothes men who claimed they were Thai secret police. They demanded to see my passport. It was middle afternoon in a public park in northern Thai city. I told them my passport was at home (another part of town) and I demanded to see ID. The biggest guy wiggled a piece of paper in my face that could have been a 1/2 price coupon for a pizza, for all I know. The older smaller guy started shouting at me when he saw I wasn't playing their game (I questioned why I need to carry a passport in a park). I asked to see his passport, and suggested he might be Burmese. His face went burgundy, the veins in his neck stood out, and he shook a fist in my face. Later, the big guy kept yelling at me to go to the back room of the police station with him, but I didn't oblige him. To make a long story short, I held my ground, and they wound up backing down and left with their tails between their legs.

I guess what I'm saying here, is there are situations (hassles with authority) where you can stand up for yourself - though you have to gauge how far you can go before things get really ugly.

Another time I had a Thai construction worker wave a crosscut handsaw in my face, but that's a story for another time. (p.s. I didn't back up and didn't even put my hands up in defense. He backed down).

A little moral support:

Free the Phuket One!

:o

If it turns out this guy does end up in the monkey house for two years for this NOTHING offense, I sure hope there are people in Phuket who can take the time to visit him to help him get through this. It could be ANY of us.

Couldn't YOU sponsor his trip to Pattaya and have him stay at your place?

As a Westerner, having just read this thread, I can honestly say I am filled with utter shame for being a westerner. The reason I am filled with utter shame is that there are so many self righteous bar stewards on here that actually think this guy deserves what he may be getting. Those of you that actually believe that the punishment fits the non-crime are a sandwich short of a picnic. At any future Thaivisa function can everyone please wear large badges with their handles on, as I really have no wish to socialise or have a beer with these puritanical idiots.

Nobody knows the real situation. Was the swearing before or at the end of the three week stint in jail? We do not know what was the guys schedule on return to the UK. Something important? work, a birthday, his mum and dads golden wedding anniversary, his sisters wedding? Imagine most of you, especially the Judge Pickles amongst us (for those that don't know he was the guy who sentenced 5 year old kids to hang for stealing a crust of bread), at the airport with your wife and kids, about to go home after two weeks on holiday, and they say you are not flying anywhere because your passport is a forgery. I think it would take a mega super human effort not to get totally pi***d off with immigration personnel, official or not. Whatever the reason, if there was one or not, this incident in no way deserves 3 weeks inside or two years inside or even banning from the country. Clearly the official is in more dire need of a blow job than anyone else in history. The forum rules on this site say it is not on to launch personal attacks and be abusive and rude, and I totally agree with that policy, but what I find even more offensive are the self righteous kn*b heads (sorry edited to say 'people') who state that a man innocent of any criminal wrong doing deserves two years inside 'to teach him a lesson'. You are an embarrassment to the human race let alone Westerners. :o

Rant Over!!

Agreed. Good rant. There is no excuse for us to gang up on Simon. He is in a fix and needs support, not a lynch mob of the Thai-ier than Thai crowd.

A passport photo is rejected if it is not suitable, and if he had no shirt on,then i don't see how he could have got the photo accepted.I think that the Thai immi.chap started off ok,just questioning Simon, but i suspect Simon used his size and mouth to belittle the guy,and from there,it's all downhill. :DI like "beachers" comment about Thai's having small brains and big ego's...To get a job in immigration requires a BA.So much for small brains.....And i wouldn't take to kindly to arrogant foreigners trying to stand over me. :o But going to jail for this, mmmmmm,Seems a bit harsh. :wai:

You obviously don't know anything about the Thai education system.

what system?? :D:D

I know the Thai education system better then most,my wife went through it and my daughter is going through it...Both have better education then the average Australian student.. :D

That really dosent say much for the aussie education system ! :P

you are usually dealing with people who have small minds and very large egos.

Just like most of the farangs on Thai Visa then?

LMAO

I raise my hat (cap, actually) to this response.

Neat, concise, apt.

Yes, we are all so superior as Farangs, aren't we.

Lets sit and pontificate on a forum about the strange wee people we put up with as we cut our Colonial swathe across the world's hungry and unclothed masses.

THEY should realise how lucky they are to have us, leading the way with our superior morals and beer skulling abilities.

In the OLD days, EVERYONE would be our servant.

These days, locals have the temerity to expect sovereignty and the right to cross sword with the mighty British and American general public.

In OLD Britain, a negro could not talk back to a white Englishman.

Now dark skinned people are passport holders in Britain? Gollywogs banned? They have rights? WOW!

Somebody forgot to tell all overseas officials across the globe about the Power of Being British, and how it must allow you access to act the way you get away with at home in every corner of the globe.

How times have changed <wrings hands>

Yeah - sorry for the poor guy. Could happen to any of us.

But I would lack the balls to shout and gesticulate at officials in a country lacking the "sophistication" and "human rights" record of UK and USA.

I mean, those countries never mistreat or disrespect the rights of foreign nationals, do they?

I have just read 12 pages of mostly supercillious crap from expats who appear with absolutely no knowledge of the true facts to have a great desire to become kiss arse Thais, and appear to have left their own self respect at home, Thais can and are often very rude to westerners for whatever reason they deem fit, so all you wannabe Thais show yourself some respect and stop kissing arse, and no I'm not a newbie here in Thailand having lived here 20 plus years Thai wife and two daughters.

I'd like to see a return to the good old days, when they had huge notices up at all the airports giving a list of personal appearances that wouldn't be allowed into the country. Can't remember the exact list, but it had things like people in sandals, people in singlets, and "hippy type people". dam_n good idea, let's bring a bit of class back into international travel, and get rid of all these rude people. Even Singapore allows long haired louts into the country now. Standards are slipping.

There is still a sign there on the rail border between Malaysia & Thailand.

Everyone was laughing and taking photos, myself included (attached)

I wonder if having any of these characteristics - sandals, long hair, silk trousers etc............ prevents entry to the boats to Koh Pha Ngan?

I do think the West has gone a bit far with "human rights" (meaning "do what you want without reprisal if you are a bad person, and live in fear of being sued if you try and obey the rules").

It has resulted in a great lack of respect generally and social meltdown.

Conversely, some balance here would be good too.

I enjoy the "respect" ingrained into this society, but it does breed its fair share of repression, ill-will, bottled emotions and pent up rage.

I think saying "He deserved it - throw away the key" is a harsh, unsympathetic and callous view.

I also think that he had to expect repercussions for his behaviour, and was foolish to try it on. He made a mistake, which I am sure all involved are beginning to regret.

GREAT news for this forum though.

This thread is getting CANED. :o

A little more transparency would be nice here in LOS, but we are not here to change the place - most expats I speak to here (and not just Westerners) are here because things here are a lot more "sensible" than back home where litigation, personal rights, "too many rules" and political correctness is running out of control.

Regarding Australia and it's "warm welcome" - not if you have an extra packet of cigarettes, or have dirty shoes, food or too many stamps in the passport. Bloody hardcore border control.

the guy doesnt deserve 2 years but he was definitly stupid/ignorant to trouble make with an official. You can make your point firmly and politely without putting yourself at risk.

these officials can have massive and fragile egos for sure. there should be a law for this instead.

Very good point.

But I wouldn't be wagering any money on Abhisit passing such legislation, and enforcing it on every official without fear or favour.

Would you?

In the meantime, when confronted with people who can kill you, jail you or take everything you own, follow a winning game plan.

After you are safely home, go for your life.

The whole WORLD can hear about it without repercussion, and you can vent to your hearts content.

....

People here are over reacting and reading things into the case that are not there. He received a three week lesson in manners and will probably not do another day in jail. He will be blacklisted and deported. As far as making a living, his Facebook profile shows him to be an expert Thai boxer. He can make money at that every night. From his own interview it looks like he has a chip on his shoulder and this could be a good life's lesson for him.

Where did you read this man has a work permit so he can earn money Thai boxing in Thailand?

perhaps the same place you read that everybody on the planet that works is legally allowed to do so, and does so at or above minimum wage, paying taxes with full disclosure, and paying all bills in a timely fashion. :o

It sounds like he lost control verbally in an airport and you can get locked up for it in probably all countries, depending on the extent. Saving face or not.

Its just one of those places you have to keep it cool.

At the same time I can completely see how you could lose it - knowing your missing your flight and there is a good chance he had no idea about Thai culture or saving face. And who would imagine 3 weeks and still unresolved!

If there is no more to the story it seems there is problem at the UK embassy. If they couldn't iron things out sooner and help there fellow citizen.

Is this going to be another video on the CNN Thailand search? Joining the airport closure, boat people being cut loose out at sea.... - Another one to explain to friends and relatives back home. Most of us love it here, but there are plenty of tourist that have never been here and plenty that will choose not to - due to things like this. In days of global recession, when few can or will spend much to vacation things like this can really hurt. :o

Two YEARS? No.

In a civilized country, maybe a few hours to cool down, if that. Unless there was physical assault which certainly wasn't in the charges.

What happened to this man even so far, is simply WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.

I told myself I wouldnt post to this forum ever again but here I am ... anyone indulge the thought that this was done purposefully??? To show the world how pathetic the human rights situation is here in Thailand? Something which, none of us farang have ever had the bravery or intelligence to do?? It's about dam_n time somebody did something...

He has trained in karate for over 15 years... if he really practiced traditional karate and is a noble warrior, a true karate-ka, then I wouldnt be at all surprised about what he has done. I've heard that he has connections with the Thai community in London ... I may be completely wrong, but, a noble thought... :o

Things are changing in the world now in terms of 'cultural relativity', especially with the upcoming generation (generation y, or whatever), which is basically a global generation. It's about time Thailand (and perhaps much of the world) shakes off cultural relativism - many of the young people coming up in the wold are over with it. They have friends on Facebook from all over the world. If one of their friend treats them like sh*t, no matter what culture they're from, they're not going to put up with it. Cultural relativity is going out, and good riddance.

I find this very hard to believe even here in Thailand . . . There is something not quite right here . . . There is far more to this story....

I think so to.

I had a shop for more than 25 years and I have some experience with the rudeness of some people like him.

They are very easily using the word racism. Once they even blame me to be a racist because I did not have one specific item in stock. And the women are even more terrible.

In all the 30 years I came in and out of Thailand I never experienced any bad behaviour of any Thai official. So I presume he must be really crossed the line. Thai people don't accept this kind of behaviour like Europeans, and they are correct not to do it. I think he made the mistake that when he called the immigration some names they would back down like they do in Europe.

You make all these assumptions about this man you have never met, why? Because he is black? If not, why?

Correct not to accept bad behavior? OK, tell him to shut up. Maybe even slap him. But two years in a hel_l hole? INSANE!
