Cambodia, China Sign Deal to Train Chinese Language Teachers
Cambodia and China have signed a new education agreement aimed at boosting Chinese language instruction across Cambodian schools, marking a fresh chapter in bilateral cooperation. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Phnom Penh on Thursday, brings together Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and China’s Ministry of Education to jointly train local Chinese language teachers. Cambodian Secretary of State Kim Sethany and Yu Yunfeng, Director-General of the Centre for Chinese-Foreign Language Cooperation and Exchange (CLEC), formalised the deal in the presence of senior officials from both countries. Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin hailed the agreement as a milestone in the two nations’ educational partnership, saying it would deepen people-to-people ties and support Cambodia’s human resource development. Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron echoed the sentiment, noting the growing popularity of Chinese language programmes in Cambodian secondary schools. The MoU outlines plans for teacher training, curriculum development, and scholarship opportunities, with a particular focus on integrating language education with vocational skills. Speaking at a seminar on the same day, Naron called for broader ASEAN-China collaboration to align education with labour market needs. The Cambodian Ministry of Education confirmed that the partnership reflects a new model for regional human resource development, especially in the context of international education reform. The initiative is expected to improve teaching quality and expand access to Chinese language instruction nationwide.
