I contacted the thai embassy in australia to ask about getting a non immigrant type o visa. I said i was going diving over 12 months and visting friends. They said i couldnt have one only a 60 day tourist visa. Why are other people on this web site able to get one so easy whats the catch i must be missing something i then called the thai brisbane consulate and told them i had a thai girlfriend and the also said 60 day tourist. Are they just <deleted> or am i missing something?

Differnt consulates and embassies have different rules. Some are stricter then others. In Australia the best place is to aply in Perth, based on visiting friends.

Don't say you have a Thai gf and don't say you want a diving vacation for a year.

Say you are on sabbathical leave and wants to cycle around the country to gather first hand experience and info on Thai culture, live with folks on the ground. Say this is for writing a book about Thailand.

Yeah, and tell 'em your pen name is Harry Nicolaides.

u said the wrong thing dude.. you can only apply for a NON Immi B VISA if you are coming to Thailand on Business.... you need a tourist visa for diving...... whether you have a thai gf is irrelevant ........

Nobody has/had mentioned a "B" visa.

Brisbane would be another adress to go. If you want to dive and will use a Dive School (probably you will do some courses?) then they can send you some paperwork to help you with your visa.

You shouldn't have contacted the embassy in Canberra as embassies are notorious for refusing visas. Brisbane and Perth are reputedly visa friendly. I would apply in person to any consulate (Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne Adelaide & Hobart; forget Sydney) and say you want a 12 month Non O visa to visit friends and take a long holiday. This may work. Perth will grant a visa if your are visiting your Thai g/f and you have a photocopy of her ID card or her passport. The following is from Perth consulate info letter.

In cases of visits to “partners” the application must be accompanied by a copy of the partner’s passport or identity card.

Talk about 'user friendly,' and creative as well. You gotta love those honorary consulates, manned by your fellow countrymen -- and not Thai bureaucrats.
