Thailand Revokes Thaksin's Passport

That people high up in the Bush's administration allowed torture of inmates is lamentable, to say the least.

However, let's put it in perspective. If those same inmates were the turnkeys, there wouldn't be any torture. Instead they would simply kill their enemies - probably by beheading.

Most, if not all, the inmates kept by the U.S. were caught while actively trying to kill coalition troops. The Afghan war got started after NYC got blindsided by an attack on the WTC - which killed several thousand civilians of many nationalities (at least two Thais, included).

All but a few of the inmates kept by US forces were not tortured. Even the few that were, were kept in clean cells with fresh air, decent meals three times per day, religious books to read, and clean clothes. If the enemies of western nations had prisoners (i.e. if they didn't kill all their prisoners) imagine what sort of conditions they'd be afforded. Take for example the westerner (Anderson) who was kept for six years in Beirut. He was in solitary confinement with no fresh air, no showers, no clean clothes, no radio, and was given one book to read that whole time (a book on ear diseases), and no news on any sorts of developments - with his case or with world events.

Thaksin still in UAE and will face arrest via Interpol: police spokesman

The Royal Thai Police has asked the cooperation of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) to arrest fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra who is believed to remain in his hideaway inside the United Arab Emirates.

"From the latest check, there is no record to confirm that Thaksin has left the UAE," police spokesman Lt General Watcharaphol Prasanratchakit said.

This is still Thailand and no matter what you are found guilty of, he still has enough cash to buy anything he wants; including his freedom. We should never forget that.

James

Sadly you are correct, but I think that this is so high profile, with implications of Treason etc that Thaksin may just have lost any friends in power that he had. He will never get back in now, so he is of no use to anyone, and I think people would be scared of touching him with a barge pole let alone any association with him. 99.9% of the time your philosophy is correct, but I think on this occasion Thaksin has blown his chance of protection though. Just my two cents worth.

Presently it is inconceivable Thaksin could ever return to Thailand. However and yes, this is still Thailand.

Given that Thaksin and the TRT were Thailand's fatally flawed response to the country's self-induced financial disaster of 1997, I anyway see clear reason to believe the tumult and chaos of these ensuing years are finally over, at long last.

How much does "freedom" actually is going to cost? In US $. How can we know how much money he has? Because Forbes has listed him?

Thaksin running out of hiding places

As former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra travels around the world, international police are preparing arrest warrants against him, reported The Age.

Nicaraguan Opposition Questions Thaksin's Passport

The Nicaraguan opposition party warned its President that issuing a diplomatic passport to Thai fugitive former PM, Thaksin Shinawatra, may be against the country's laws. Meanwhile, the Vice President of Nicaragua denies any prior knowledge of the issue.

The Nicaraguan opposition party warned the Nicaraguan government, after it authorized a diplomatic passport for fugitive former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra, that his position did not warrant this accreditation, even if there are plans to appoint him to be an investment consultant to the country.

A report in the Nicaraguan press revealed that Vice President Jaime Morales, who is responsible for overseas investor relations, does not have a close relationship with Thaksin. However, Thaksin has been appointed as a special ambassador of Nicaragua.

The report said that the Nicaraguan government, led by President Daniel Ortega, remains quiet about this issue, fearful that it could be lead to a conflict between the two countries.

Thailand does not have an extradition agreement with Nicaragua, but the Thai government is going to try to negotiate an extradition with Nicaragua.

Thaksin was reported to have been using his diplomatic passport to fly to Nicaragua from the United Arab Emirates early Saturday morning. However, there is no confirmation from the Nicaragua immigration bureau that Thaksin entered the country.

The Thai police also came out to say yesterday that there were no departure records of Thaksin from the UAE.

T gets passports from other countries, based upon his wealth.

T gets divorced - so his wife can more easily pursue seized assets.

T gets at least one 'diplomatic passport.'

T has been known to endanger his own children - by hiding ill-gotten wealth in their names.

Methinks, a name/identity change is yet another ploy for the ever-resourceful T.

If other ruses fail, he will consider plastic surgery - as it's not uncommon for big time crooks on the run to resort to that.

You mean the doctors have a new machine that can put a square head pegged into a round hole?

Must take one heroic surgery for this one to fit.

Thaksin ready to return to help red shirts but …

A Pheu Thai MP claimed on Wednesday that fugitive exPM Thaksin Shinawatra had planned to return home on April 14, the day soldiers started cracking down on his redclad supporters in Bangkok.

Lop Buri MP Suchart Lainamngern said that on the day Thaksin flew into a neighbouring country on a private jet and was planning to enter Thailand via a Northeastern province to solicit people before moving to Bangkok and joining the red shirts.

He claimed that Thaksin had decided to return because that was the promise he had made if the army started cracking down on his supporters.

However, Thaksin's sister Yaowapa Wongsawat, along with other MPs, advised him against it because they were worried about his safety. At that time, there were several rumours of groups planning to assassinate Thaksin.

Suchart added that Thaksin would return to Thailand if the government lifted the state of emergency, imposed reconciliation laws and revoked the 2007 Constitution, and went back to using the 1997 charter.

He didn't come back because he's a coward. Likes to have poor farmers do his fighting and dying for him. Anyone care to take issue?

UAE supports Thaksin's extradition

The Foreign Ministry of the United of Arab Emirates (UAE) is ready to cooperate with the Thai government in extraditing outlawed former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya's assistant Panit Wikitset said on Thursday.

Unfortunately, Thaksin had already left the country.

Mr Panit said UAE officials told him that Thaksin had entered their country as a businessman on March 27. The UAE government later notified Thaksin that it would not be appropriate for him to stay in the country any longer because he used the country as a base for his political activities. Thaksin had left the UAE for an undisclosed destination on Monday, UAE officials said.

UAE to cooperate in arresting Thaksin who fled: Panit

The United Arab Emirates has promised to try to arrest fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra although he has fled the sultanate since April 20, Vice Minister Panit Vikitseth said on Thursday.

UAE foreign affairs authorities revealed that Thaksin's arrival took place on March 27 declaring himself as businessman, Panit said.

After Thaksin used the UAE as his base to attack Thailand triggering the Songkran mayhem, he was reprimanded to stop his hostile action, he said.

UAE Confirms Thaksin Has Left

The Assistant to the Foreign Minister said that the United Arab Emirates has agreed to cooperate with Thailand in not providing a platform for exiled PM Thaksin Shinawatra to launch an attack against the Thai government. Latest report says Thaksin has already left the UAE.

Assistant to the Foreign Minister, Panich Vikitsret, revealed the UAE has informed him during his visit there that ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra has left the country April 20.

He did so on requests by the government, fearing dampened relations with Thailand as Thaksin had been using the country to launch verbal attacks on Thailand. However, his destination is not known.

The UAE added further that Thaksin will be admitted back into the country only if he refrains from using it as a base to attack Thailand.

Panich also said the ministry has prepared a draft of a bilateral extradition treaty that it will send to the UAE in an attempt to bring Thaksin back to Thailand.

The draft will have to be approved by the Thai Parliament before the two countries can work on a bilateral extradition treaty, as the UAE also has a suspect in Thailand that they want extradited to the country.

Thaksin, who fled Thailand in 2006 after he was convicted of corruption charges, claims that the trial against him was politically motivated. There are concerns that he is using his Dubai base to wage a political campaign against the Thai government.

Panich said the UAE government as well as Dubai state had given their assurances that they would not allow anybody to launch attacks on Thailand from there.

Strangely enough, I sat next to a Liberian yesterday on a coach journey and had a pleasant conversation about his country. Sounds not dissimilar from Thailand in some ways and as he described the former rebel leader and President Charles Taylor (now in The Hague on trial for a number of crimes against humanity), I saw distinct similarities with Thaksin. Of course, corruption and nepotism are rife, so Mr T should feel right at home in Liberia.

But what is Thakky doing talking with foreign leaders as if he is still the PM of Thailand? Surely this must be damaging to both countries' reputations?

He imnagines he will be the returning in triumph leader of Thailand,

so drum up business for the family dynasty now.

I and others have often compared him to Napoleon, but Thakky's type of self-delusion and pretentions to leadership, when he quite clearly would sell his Granny for a few baht if it furthered his own cause, are on a different level altogether, especially in the modern age on Internet and rapid telecommunicatiosn when a lie is harder to conceal amongst the thinking part of the population. :o
