I'm not asking this for myself. I'm asking for my brother-in-law who will be joining my wife and I in Bangkok. He is Thai and I'm concerned that he will have a hard time accepting how much a taxi will cost him to go from the airport to our hotel. Are there any type of express buses that go from the airport to the center of Bangkok?

Any suggestions for an inexpensive alternative would be greatly appreciated.

Free shuttle to Transportation Center, then on one of the 55x buses into town.

I took one of these two weeks back and a songteaw to final destination on On Nut, total cost around 40B, not not the fasted method.

Edit: for Sukhumwit take 552, turns left on Asoke.

Thank you for this good piece of information tartempion. I assume when you say "take 552", you mean take bus # 552. I will pass this information on to my brother-in-law.

I'm sure for him speed is not an issue. He gets in around 2:00 pm. I already bought his airline ticket which was 436 baht. I can imagine he would be hesitant to spend around as much for the taxi ride into town.

Another alternative and probably the cheapest!

Get a metered taxi from the airport to Ladkrabang train station (best to get taxi from arrivals floor as they use the meter!) Guessing about 70B. Take train to Asok station/platform which is approx 100m before the new Makkasan (airport link) station. The charge for this currently is free for Thai's and 5B for Farangs and the journey will take approx 30 mins.

Good eh and you miss all the traffic!

The times for these trains in the afternoons are 13.23, 14.42, 1500 and 17.20.

Once at Asok, walk 5 mins to Petchaburi MRT and go to Sukhumvit station for 16B (1 stop).

Job done!

Thank you everyone for all the good suggestions. I'll give him all this information and let him decide which one he wants to do. I do like the idea of taking a train since traffic during the day can be quite a hassle. It is a little more expensive than the free shuttle and bus 552 option.

Our hotel is very close to the Emporium, so he would take the BTS to the Phrom Phong station.

Unless he is 14 years old, I see no reason to be concerned for him. If he is hard up and Thai, and knows you are not paying, I'm sure he can work out the buses for himself. I'm certain that I could do the same if I wished, and I am not a native speaker.

You can't beat the 552 at 34 Baht :)

Does the 552 go past the Emporium on its way to Asoke? If so, does it have a stop near there? If you don't know, do you know if there is a website that provides the route information? If so then I'll let my brother-in-law take a look at it.

The hotel is walking distance from either the Emporium or Phrom Phong BTS station.

The 552 takes Sukhumvit On Nut to Asoke where it turns left and stops whenever you ring the bell.

Stops like any other BTMA city bus every 300m on request.

If you try to do that, be prepared that the driver might swear at you. The poor guys q for 2 hours, and all he gets is 70 or so Baht.

Fair point, I meant to say the departures floor! That way the taxi driver has just dropped off people to depart so has just arrived at the airport.
