I'm looking for a childrens dentist in Bangkok.

School dentist sent home report suggesting that about 6 or 7 upper front teeth (first teeth) should be removed surgcally.

Normally they would fall out to make way for second teeth, but school dentist says they should be surgically removed. They are badly decayed (and i've discovered that this is from too much milk going to bed, and for a long time drinking several bottles of milk during her sleeping hours.)

Child has just turned 4 years old.

I'm not all that keen on the idea of a small 4 year old being knocked out with full anaesthaesia, or even having multiple injections to kill the nerves, if it's not really critical to remove the teeth.

Anybody had any experience with childrens teeth matters or childrens dentists, in Bangkok?

Appreciate any comments you can share.

We had need to take our 2.5 year old son to a dentist in Bkk because of cavities in his baby teeth.

There was 5 affected teeth. After the second visit we decided not to proceed as it was such a traumatic experience for him.

The dentist advised us as long as there was no pain just leave them to fall out on their own.

We are back in Australia now and we have decided to just let them go untill they fall out on their own accord.

It is a very very traumatic experience. On the second visit it took 4 of us to hold him down and the thought of putting our son under general anesthetic at 2.5 years old in a Thai hospital was not an option.

The cost was; Petriatric doctor, anesthestiast, dentist to book a whole day for hospital visit, nurses, etc etc was quoted at about 60,000 bht (BNH Hospital).

Is your child in pain? they fall out by themself at 6.

I can give you the pedriatric dentist number if you want to go ahead.

The Bangkok Dental Hospital on Sukhumvit Soi 49 is excellent, ask specifically for a doctor specializing in children.

Don't go straight to an oral surgeon; see a general dentist first and ask for a second opinion as to whether surgery really necessary.

My experience there is that they are very good at explaining options and letting clients make an informed choice.

Thanks for all the replies.

I discovered that a good friend has a brother on holidays in Bangkok right now, and he's a childrens dentist.

Here's a quick summary of his comments:

- First teeth naturally fall out from about 4.5 years up to as late as 7 years old.

- It's extremely rare that they don't fall out naturally.

- Surgical removal before the teeth are ready to fall out naturally is not appropriate and if done could lead to gum and other complications, including misalignment of the jaw hinges, and more.

- If there is pain because of decay, then handle this through oral hygiene and similar means and perhaps some occasional mild pain killers.

One option could be to have the teeth cleaned thoroughly (and ensure this is done by a dedicated childrens dentist who can make it a fun experience for the child, without anaesthesia and without nerve killing injections) to remove the decayed parts then paint the teeth with a protective covering. But removing the decay should only be done if absolutely necessary.

- Full anaesthesia for very young children is very dangerous and can very easily get out of control resulting in death or other very severe complications, and don't believe a dentist who tells you " it's just for a few minutes, so it's OK".

- Adjust the child's diet if that's what's causing the decay.

- Seriously avoid bad experiences in terms of dentist visits / doctors visits at such a young age.

- Don't quickly believe reports from school dental visits, in many countries the visiting 'dentist' is a student or a dental hygiene nurse, with little to zero real experience and insight.

- Always get a second opinion before you take any action.

- Don't ever hesitate to change your dentst / doctor, and don't hesitate to stop any treatment that your not comfortable with.

There is a Clinic near Ploenchit-Wireless Road junction where a dentist is graduated from Munich, Germany and most other is Prof from Chula Dental School. German speaking kids may feel more comfortable when they can talk directly.

You can message me for tel. number

Dear LazyCat,

Thanks for this information, sounds just what I'm ultimately looking for especially the caring approach of the dentist and recommending only what is needed. The price is also a plus.

On the broader medical subject, I've become quite negative about the so called '5 star' hospitals both here in Bkk and Pattaya. Over about 20 years I've seen many mistakes (my own treatment, that of my adult Thai son and his young daughter, and i've been severely ripped off by one hospital) and the prices are getting to be outrageous.

On the recommendation of a farang friend (lived in Thailand 25 years, is a Doctor of Medicine, but gave up practice many years ago), i've been going when convenient to the government hospital in Sri Racha.

My farang doctor friend is quite demanding in terms of medical professionalism but he gives this hospital 10 out of 10 for everything. Their equipment is state of the art.

I've now visited Sri Racha about 5 times, every time I've been more than satisfied with the medical treatment. All the doctors are board certified, and they all speak excellent English, and all have a very professional, very friendly and caring bed-side manner, and they're all good listeners and happy to engage in discussion with patients.

Another plus that I like is the polite and caring way the nursing and admin. staff speak to the Thai patients.

Cost is a tiny fraction of what I've been paying at the '5 star' places. A recent example, in one visit:

- Full blood testing

- Second visit to ENT doctor, plus ear drops

- Second audio testing

- First visit to eye specialist

- Second visit to dermatologist, plus medication

Total cost - 752Baht. (They don't accept credit cards.)
