Neeranam
Can anyone tell me what the Thai word, "salak" translates as. Not sure how it's spelt. The only time I've heard it was something to do with building a traditional Thai house.
Johpa
Salak can be a verb for to carve or to chisel wood. A chang salak can be a wood carver or sculptor. Edited May 15, 2009 by Johpa
teacup
It has 2 meanings 1- salak = carving 2- salak = wood specie using in traditional thai house....called mai-salak by the thais When I was growing up, one of our houses was a traditional thai house. We used mai-salak (salak wood) for posts, poles, bedroom doors, and esp for flooring/decking, .....but not for the wall panel tho, because it's too heavy wood for it. Most of them came in rough-sawn,..... esp for the flooring/decking, they came in varies in sizes - as wide as 30 inches. Beside teak, the next best wood for a tradition thai house can be found using mai-salak Edited May 15, 2009 by teacup
