Hi Gents!

I just discovered this very interesting forum and I've got a questions regarding the availability of certain drugs in Thailand.

I'm working for a large IT company in Germany and I have to travel all around the world. Sometimes I need to work three days and nights without a break. A drug called Modafinil helped me to stay awake and focused. No problem at all. I coul work three days and then go sleeping.

Right now I'm down in Pattaya reorganizing some cable stuff. I've got two days until I have to start work. So I'd like to know are there any drugs like Modafinil, Methylphenidat, Adderall available OTC. I've already been to the Memorial Hospital to get some morphine for my chronic pain issues (ran out of the fentanyl patches), but this took a long time, it was expensive and I had to talk to a doctor. (I've got a Master Degree of Medicine myself).

So do you have any ideas which drugs are available over the counter and which are available only in hospitals? I don't want to go back to the hospital, because of the waiting, the prices AND talking to somebody who tells me what I already know...

Cheers :)

Thai's tend to abuse the type of drugs you mention so they are largely banned. I too have used modafinil and know it's not addictive at all but I still doubt it will be made available in Thailand any time soon. You better stick with Red Bull.

Hospitals can prescribe Ritalin (Rubifen) on a physician's order.

Rubifen is the Methylphenidate I mentioned above and I thought it is only for kids with ADHS? Also: I don't want to become addicted to childrens cocaine. :)

And coffeine doesn't do the job for me. Once I had a coffeine intoxication after three days of work and it didn't help at all.

Maybe if I ask my doctor from home to send me my Modafinil with a prescription via express mail....?

AFAIK Modafinil, while not approved for use in Thailand, is not on any contraband list either. Therefore I imiagine you can provided:

- quantitiy not more than 30 day supply (importation of medications in larger quantity require a license)

- contents of the package will have been clearly prescribed for you by a doctor (pharmacy lable with your name, doctor's name etc)

- to be on safe side it would be good to have on your person (as opposed to in the package) a statement from a doctor saying you have been prescribed this and for what condition. Will probably not need it, but best to be prepared, especially given the somewhat "grey status"of this particular drug in Thailand.

Courier services in Thailand are not geared towards non-commercial imports and using them usually increases rather than decreases delays and hassles with customs. have it sent by either regular air mail or EMS.

Unsolicited adviCe but I would feel irresponsible if I did not give it: working 3 days without sleep is not good for you and no drug alters that fact; in fact a drug that enables you to do so, even if it in itself has no dangerous effects, is potentially harmful if it leads to you not getting the regular sleep your body needs.

Do be careful and try not to make a habit of this type of thing. Nature wants us to sleep for very good reasons....

Ritalin is an attention-focusing medicine prescribed for adults who are diagnosed with narcolepsy or adult ADD. I often get 100 or more 10-mg tablets, without seeing the neurologist again. It is not dangerous if used as prescribed. I echo Sheryl's unsolicited medical advice about intentional, prolonged sleep deprivation.

Sounds like this could not be done in one day. :)

I've got a Bachelour Degree of Medicine myself. I know what I'm doing is very wrong. But it gets me good money and in a few years I can retire maybe even here in the land of smile

PseudoEphedrine is available in 60mg tabs in Tesco pharmacies and no doubt every other pharmacy, Actifed is about 40baht for about 10 tabs Thai brand Sulidine about half price. My wife thinks it sends her to sleep (with alcohol). Actifed in the US no longer contains pseudoephidrine but does in Thailand and the UK where it is a prescription drug. Both these tabs also contain a nasal congestant.

Actifed can make you sleepy because it contains triprolidine HCl.

The non-drowsy alternative is Clarinase, which has loratadine and double the amount of pseudoephedrine.
