Can't seem to find any reliable information on the net, and a lot of the forum posts here are old or contradictory because of the number of different visa types and numerous rule changes. So - in an effort to keep it simple and hopefully find someone in the know:

1. If I go to the Mai Sae border, can I just walk over and back to get a 15 day stamp without needing photos, proof of income, etc. Is it only open at certain times? And can this be done on public buses without the expensive minibuses as I'd like to see the golden triangle while in the area. Alternatively, if I just went to Chiang Rai would a taxi driver just take me to the border then on a tour?

2. Alternatively, going to Mae Hong Son - do I need photos/proof of income, is it only open at certain times?

If anyone can say what this is likely to cost for UK nationals that'd be really helpful too - I've heard some reports of 10 dollars, others of 500 baht.

Hope someone can help as our visas run out on Wednesday, thanks!
