G'day,

I went shopping for a cover for the car as we are losing our sheltered porch soon. Found some "protect everything" types at Big C for 600 THB. The salesman said it is okay but it wouldn't stand the heavy rain. The better ones he recommended runs for 1800 THB and it was 2 layered or something, completely waterproof. Unfortunately the size I was looking for was sold out.

They are very costly though. Honda sells ones made for your model for 1600 THB, but he says they are of the 600 THB quality or just a little better.

Any truth in all that?

Upon his recommendation, I bought a Thai brand 100% Carnauba wax for 790THB. Turtle wax runs for 1300 THB which is way too much. SupercheapAuto in Australia sells them for only AUD 12! I was looking for Meguires but they didn't carry it. I find that even the Thai brand is expensive, don't Thais wax their cars?

I wax my Yaris at meguires detailing center. Vacum inside, wash and wax at 350 baht. I guess thats what most Thais do too.

I inquired at a car detailing shop at the car park of Tesco Lotus. They quoted me 1500 THB for my Jazz for that same service! I don't even know what wax they use but the price had me running.

Salesmen, in my opinion, rarely know anything, but I agree with the given advice. Cheap covers aren't waterproof, and the branded ones I've used (Toyota) are of low quality, you are just paying for the name.

However, car covers don't need to be waterproof to be effective - your car will get wet anyway when you drive it in the rain, and it is rust-proofed by way of sealant, paint and coatings; car covers are best thought of as ways to prevent harmful things (not water) from getting on your paint-work such as tree sap, chemicals, grit etc. Cheap ones are just fine.

I've always preferred liquid waxes; I only drive a Toyota Wish, so I just get the Johnsons Kit Car Wax around 100baht and apply it every week. Can't see the sense in getting an expensive wax for a Toyota plus they are so difficult to apply.
