I returned to the UK from Thailand on Tuesday on a BA flight that originated in Sydney. Wednesday I woke up with a bit of a cough and some boughts of sneezing. Thursday the coughing and sneezing got more severe. Thursday night I developed a temperature. Yesterday I went to the doctors as I have mild asthma and I was finding it hard to breathe. The doctor said that due to the symptons I had and the fact I had flown back on a flight which originated in Australia, he would have to call the Swine Flu hotline.

While he called I was left in a little room on my own. After about 10 minutes he came back in dressed in a gown and face mask and told me that due to the flight I was on they were taking no risks. He swabbed the back of my throat and nose for testing. I was told that a fax would be sent out to a local chemist who had stocks of Tamiflu and my wife would have to pick it up. I would have to go home for 7 days and not go out to any public areas.

So yesterday I started taking Tamiflu and some penicillin that the Doc prescribed for my chest. Last night my temperature went up to about 102F. I had quite a crappy nights sleep as you can imagine, but around 4am things seemed to turn slightly. I got up about an hour ago, my temperature is down to about 100F and I'm feeling a bit better.

I won't find out until at least Monday if I actually had (A)H1N1 or just a normal bought of flu or something else.

Probably not as planes are notorious for spreading around viruses, so ti doesn't mean you have that virus as you were in a situation where you can pick up lots of other viruses. I am sure the Dr would have told you this.

No but probably the first paranoid hypochondriac to post on TV about your " supposed " problem! Get a grip man. Are you sure it's not Ebola or dengue or just galloping gut rot ? :)

Hope you get well, whatever it is. And do keep us posted.

It's always a little scary when the Doctor gets scared.

Best of luck.

actually while i was in dengue fever country (korat) i found out that my niece in boston (age 16) was in hospital with the swine flue, tested postitive as had many kids in her school. she was hospitalized as she is ashtmatic and got tamiflu. she felt better fairly quickly, was released to home quarantine, and then went back to school. two days later came down with a different, viral something or other so back to being at home,a lthgouh tested negative this time round for the swine flu. as far as i know, since she is asthmatic, she does get the flu A vaccine yearly but maybe they didnt this year? i know this year my kid was on the 'at risk' list and got the vaccine and it seemed to minimilize her symtptoms when ill (on kibbutz when one person is sick, EVERYONE gets sick since most of us eat in a communal dining room, and work together and go to meetings together)...

hope u feel better, from what i understood from my mother, the only reason s. was hospitalized in the first place was her age and being asthmatic she was considered an at risk patient. other then that, nothing special but rather like any other flu that she gets.

I would not worry with the suspected flu that much, the confimed type is much worse :D

Whatever is is Charlie, it is never nice to run a fever. You actually do have fever, most TV members on the countless topics regarding this hype are talking each other to wards a fever.

Hope you will recover soon, because you will, what ever it is/was.

Odds are that you have a noormal flu but of course they need to make sure. Let us know the outcome and take care.

BTW egt some zinc throat lozenges if they are sold OTC in the UK, help a lot.

Well, it has been confirmed. I got a call from the SE Flu Response Centre this morning and my test was positive. I am starting to feel much better now, but the bad news is that my wife has started to get a sore throat, cough etc. so in all likelihood she has finally caught it too. They are making arrangements for my daughter to receive lower dose Tamiflu, but as my wife is showing symptons, she will have to be swabbed as I was and probably receive the full dose.
