The heat , the smells , the crowdy streets of Bangkok , all the friendly smiles.

Coming from a small quite town in Norway the difference was pretty high.

I arrived at Don Muang Airport for the first time as a young teenager coming to visit my father who lived here. I remember being shocked at how he had to push all the cars behind his & in front of his at the airport, in order to drive out. All those cars bumping into each other, I couldnt stop laughing.

That was followed with weeks of amazement in how much attention I got from the ladies when we went out.....it was like a dream, whereas girls my age back home were still giggling when you looked at them, these girls wanted to do.....WHAT :D ! I think I blew years woth of pocket money in just a few days :) ....such a naughty young man :D

1992 was the first time I came here as an inocent 18 year old :) , was spending the summer in Singapore, so ended going to Phuket for a 5 day trip with my school mate. All I can vaguely remeber is getting pretty mashed and getting lots of attention from the girls. On return to Singapore being questioned by my mates Mother as to what we did, we had to make up a whole new story which included trips to places of interest :D . I don't think we left the bars for the whole trip, other than to go back to the hotel. Oh those were the days of 24 hour opening in Patong.

What month in 1992 were you here.....we probably passed each other in the street without knowing we would later become partners in crime. Maybe even shared a GF or two.....eeew yuk, hope I was first :)

Yes, I remember. October 19, 1998. But I can't really say exactly what I did that first night in Bangkok as it would damage my reputation ... :)

One thing about first impressions though. They don't always turn out as you expected. My first impression of Pattaya was that it was the most horrible smelly place on the planet. On the other hand, my first impression of Chiang Mai was that I would be moving there. Turns out I kind of like horrible smelly places, who knew?

Back in 2001 arrived in Bangkok for a 48hr stayover to pick up a Visa for Vietnam, id never been to Asia before so didnt know what to expect. The first night I ventured out of the Hotel and the belboy told me to go to Pat pongs, I guess I arrived about there about 9pm by 11pm I was flat broke, not knowing the system the girls had me buying evryone a drink (Yes i was told to ring the bell hahaha) and I must have bar fined a girl in the first 3 bars just for them sitting with me and then left without them..... you gotta love em.

Second night I told the bell boy I needed help, he aranged his friend to come with me, the young lad told me showed me the ropes and saved me a fortune, unfortunately after 6 bottles of Chang he was throwing up in the gutter... after that I felt older and wiser enough to fly solo :-)

I remember my first day quite vividly. It was the middle of February in 1997 and my wife had left me with her drug addict son 10 months before because she couldn't handle the stress. I was naive in thinking I could help him, but a month later, after having to get the cops to remove him from my home he had just trashed, I needed to get away. A fishing buddy who spent his winters in Thailand said to meet him in Bangkok at the Miami hotel and I thought why the heck not. I had been celibate since my wife left, but I certainly wasn't going to get involved with another woman any time soon.

My plane arrived at Don Muang airport about 5 PM and I caught a bus into the city at rush hour. I couldn't believe the traffic. Sukmumvit was in the middle of construction with the middle two lanes taken out for the new sky train that was being built. Motorbikes were riding on the sidewalks and vehicles were driving in the oncoming lanes. It was a zoo, but I sat there fascinated.

Eventually I found the Nana plaza area and walked the few blocks to the Miami Hotel. What a dump! But it was cheaper than other hotels and had just the right amount of seedyness to give it some character. My buddy was drinking a Singa in the lobby when I arrived and we soon dropped my bags in my dimly lit room. We went out for a meal and then a pub crawl. I couldn't believe all the women grabbing at me, but Ken just hauled me off to one place after another. Every place was jumping and I was in a daze. Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza and the bars along the railway were all full of punters. There were shows going on of every description and I couldn't believe the variety.

Somewhere after 2 AM we wound up at the Thermai club and joined the crush of people drinking and dancing. By that time I was exhausted but finally decided to take one of the more insistent ladies back to my room. It wasn't the greatest by any stretch of the imagination, but when you've been celibate for 10 months who cares.

The next day we left for Pattaya were I spent the following 3 weeks playing in the sun and seeing the sights. Ken had to babysit me for about a week to get me up to speed on what not to do in Thailand... such as falling in love many times over. For the naive it is oh so easy to do. Eventually I learned what I enjoyed and what to avoid. Thankfully, I'm not a big boozer and never get drunk, so I stayed reasonably safe. I have been coming to South East Asia ever since and can truthfully say it's improved my life immeasurably. I'd never to back to my old ways of being tied to one woman. I can ration whatever I want on a budget and never have to worry about a lawyer fleecing me for being "Mr Goodguy Sucker".

Maybe, and maybe the OP didn't deserve it as obviously he has held at least some interest in Thailand I get very sick of people using Thailand for their own reasons, that can be financial, forthegirls ,for the booze, for the drugs, for the girls or even for the boys who never have a word to say for the place Yes Thailand does have its faults, and the people who can be the nicest in the world can even be the nastiest. (sometmes even in the same person) but faults and all Thailand is a country I consider one of my homes and sometimes continual negative remarks without any good ones irritate me. If his post does not reflect his attitude to Thailand and the Thai people I apologize to him.

1980-ish, Pakistan airlines, Dharan to Don Muang. (After Saudi even the flight was like heaven.) Honey Hotel on Suk soi 19 (first Thai words I learnt ,soi seep-gow!) A guy I met on the plane took me to my first massage parlour where my first masseusse lassooed me and had me broke after 10 days. I had to change my ticket and go stay at my mum's until I could go back to work!

:)

I did note the place had potential though!!

..first time in Thailand I was feeling rather ill after 16.5 hours worth of flights from Vancouver - Hong Kong - BKK.. the air conditioning stopped working on the Cathay Pacific airplane and it was <deleted>' HOT!!..i had to take off my shirt..socks and roll up my pants..nobody complained because everyone was HOT..the stewardess told me this was the first time the air conditioning had not been working all the flights she had been on :D .. finally arrived in BKK.. It seemed surreal..WOW!!..look at those beautiful, shapely, exotic, sun-kissed, pouty-mouthed,wonderful walking, smallish (farang land seems to be getting fatter and fatter) Thai women!! :) ..got to the Mandarin Hotel late and slept..next morning in the lobby for breakfast noted (with mild disgust..my bad) some farang with their thai BF's..tried not to look..they fawned over each other like newly-weds..actually ALOT more than newly-weds..got the helll out of there and walked outside...BOOOOM!!..the stifling heat was like a BLAST FURNACE!! :D Walked a half a block and right back into the cool of the air conditioned lobby.. to wait for the Thai lady that I'd met online.. that was coming to the hotel to meet me..took one look at her and.. WOW!! :D .. my senses were assaulted by a cornicopia of BLISS..except for that bloody jet lag..

In 1993 I flew into Phuket after having about a week in Singapore. I'd already had the experience of a few nights with Thai 'working girls' at Orchard Towers so I didn't think that aspect of Thailand was such a big deal. Spent one night at the Holiday Resort, in Patong, and then went out on 4 day live aboard diving safari to the Similan Islands. Still regard that as one of the high points of my time in Thailand. Uncrowded dive sites and fantastic underwater terrain. Went back to Patong and was totally under whelmed by the girlie/bar scene on Soi Bangla. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I live in Thailand now and still think the bargirl/whoring thing is totally overated. Many better things to do with a persons time in this country.

I get very sick of people using Thailand for their own reasons,

So what are you using Thailand for then ???.... :)

Very good with the partial quote aren't you. Anyone would think you were a journalist The original sentance was

quote

I get very sick of people using Thailand for their own reasons, that can be financial, forthegirls ,for the booze, for the drugs, for the girls or even for the boys who never have a word to say for the place

End quote,

not the same at all is it

I do have some good words to say about here.

I have my reasons here,

They are to live a reasonably comfortable life here

To learn more about the language and culture that is the inheritance of my daughter and grandaughter.

To continue many friendships gained over a long period

Seeing as we are on a forum, where we can comment pretty freely, the person posting the thread had a right to voice his opinion, as much as you had the right to post a rebuttal...

Do the persons you have detailed in the above quote have less right than you to be here ??...unless you are a PR or Citizen...answer is.... they have as much right as you, whatever their motivation for being here

....seeing as you are being critical of people "using" Thailand for finanical reasons...then please go ahead and criticise me...because I fall into the grouping mentioned of "using" Thailand ... I work here... :D

I didn't report any attitudes. I was asked to report on my experiences on my first day in Thailand. I did so. Take them as you will. Some people might think "Oh, my! what horrendous experiences! I'm not going to Thailand!" Others, such as yourself, might think "Oh, my! What a loser, to report such experiences of visiting Thailand, where it is surely not possible ever to have such experiences!" Experiences are experiences. Your reaction to my report of my experiences reveals much more about you than it does about me.

I have now lived in Thailand for nine years. I have constructed a situation for myself in which I do not have such experiences any more.

Thank you for your apology. My attitudes towards Thailand (viewed as a geographical entity with clearly demarcated boundaries that have been created artificially) are simple, leaving aside human intervention: there are some beautiful places; there are some not-so-beautiful places; some places are by the sea; other places are on high land or on the plains; mostly it is hot; sometimes it is cool; sometimes it rains. I prefer coastal and mountain areas to the plains and am largely indifferent between coastal and mountain areas. I prefer cool weather to both hot and rainy weather, but generally do not dislike hot weather and sometimes enjoy the rain. On the other hand, my attitudes towards Thai people are complex. Perhaps I will post them one day; but not today.

It took less than 4 hours to notice that our hotel roms at the Siam Beverly Hotel at Ratchada were ransacked. When I came back to the hotel everything had been taken with a false key and not only from me but from half a tour group staying at the same floor and who had also just arrived. I do not have to reiterate that the hotel staff was involved. It was a funny sight to see the police opening the ceiling as if the people would have disappeared there or the entire floor would have stored their belongings.

Yes, it was 5 July 1960. We walked down the stairs at the plane (Cathay Pacific) and across the tarmac while those who came to greet us stood above on the observation deck (open air). I will never forget the blast of heat coming off the concrete as we walked. No jet lag as we traveled by ship from San Francisco to HK (RMS Oronsay). We then went to the home of the people we stayed with (until we found a house, soi 11/Chaiyote-#21, now three multi storied condo/apartments). I remember Dad taking off with the men to go shopping, very atypical for him, for some appropriate clothing and a 'slide' camera. (I still have the Canan Flex and a dozen of the 1.5" wide Thai silk ties). As a six year old riding down Sukumvit with the all the forms of pedal/three wheel/four wheel taxis, the yellow busses, the noise, the people, and the roadside klongs, not to mention the various 'aromas', was a wonderment in itself.

What stands OUT for you .. on that FIRST day ??

...more than 30 years ago, sitting in a taxi, coming from the old...old Don Muang airport I spotted a guy on the side of the road, walking with....

an ELEPHANT...... :D

Never seen before.

Although this photo is taken in India, it was a bit similar like the one I saw:

post-13995-1246201687_thumb.jpg

In the evening a Bangkok Farang expert took my friend and myself to a ''no-hands" restaurant and we were fed by elegant and beautiful young Ladies... :)

also: never experienced before.

Next day: traveled to Patong Beach - Phuket when it was still PARADISE... :D

Stepped off the plane at Don Muang in May, 1968 at age 19 and I was immediately hit by the humidity and smell probably from the klongs. Then a taxi drive into the city to the Chavalit Hotel and my preconceived notion that Bangkok would be a small town was completely displaced. I felt like I had won the lottery of U.S. Army assignments twice with my stateside assignment at Ft Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York and then overseas to Bangkok, Thailand.
