Buddha Images in Strange Posture Discovered in Ayutthaya

Two Buddha images in strange postures have been discovered in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in District.

Meanwhile, an abbot has asked the public not to be superstitious.

One Buddha image looks like the goddess of mercy or Quan Yin, sitting with knees up and handles a novice in her hands, enshrined in a chapel at Khanonnau Buddhist Temple. Locals and tourist are flocking to worship the image.

The abbot at the Khanonnau Buddhist Temple revealed that the Buddha image has been enshrined at the temple for more than 20 years. He warns the public not to be superstitious.

Another Buddha image in a different posture has been found at Ban Wa Temple in the same area. Villagers said both the Buddha images were built by 75-year-old sculptor Siri Phakahan.

Siri revealed that the posture of two Buddha images was designed by monks from the temples.

He admitted that he had never known the Buddha posture before, but he agreed to do the work.

He added that since the Buddha image was enshrined at Ban Wa Temple, a lot of money has been donated to the temple, resulting in the construction of a new chapel. Both locals and tourists visit to pay respect.

I doubt it's a coincidence that "Kannon" is the Japanese pronunciation of Quan Yin, and this temple is called Khanonnau. But the style and posture of the image are not Japanese.

Jeez, you know a religion has monotony problems when all you have to do is change the way a figure is seated to get throngs of worshipers. I see they've got the fat Chinese Buddha to the left of this statue. Seems more like a bored abbot copying mass-produced figurines then real Thai sculpture.

The image suggests a syncretic combination of Kuan Yin -- in terms of the three-level hair 'bun' and raised leg as for Avalokitesvara (often considered a male counterpart to Kuan Yin) in the 'world-protecting' pose -- and Buddha. The inscription says 'Noble Buddha in the Nursing Posture' -- nurse in the sense of 'treat in a hospital, not breast-feeding :)

I would like to see a photo of the other 'strange' posture.
