thanks all who replied to my post on accomodation near patong would be grateful to have an idea of some inexpensive restaurants (main course under 200 Baht serving western and thai food) and bars where there is a friendly atmosphere (please don't say girly bars as i know they are always friendly)

your help will be much appreciated

For low priced fare, you are better off just to go for a wander and see what takes your fancy - you are bound to find something to suit within a few minutes' walk.

However, there is any number of them along Thanon Ratuthit/200 Pi, and also try Soi Sansabai (continuation over Ratuthit from Bangla). There's an OTOP eatery in the basemenrt at Jungceylon (although it's not up to much). I like the food at Sheila's (on the left, 3/4s of the way up Sansabai heading away from Ratuthit) and the place next door and opposite the Yorkshire Inn (just up from Sheila's). The Islander off Bangla isn't bad. It really depends upon the type of cuisine you are after.
