anyone know if the services have been altered recently? sure there used to be a 6.30pm and 7.30pm or so services overnight to BKK but according to the timetable here http://www.railway.co.th/English/Time_HTML.asp there is now only one departure per evening at 9pm? or am i missing something?

My wife and girls took the "sleeper train" on Sunday afternoon. Depature was at 4:30 PM. Unfortunately delayed 8 hours when it hit a truck on the railway crossing between Lamphun and Lampang.

Looking at the timetable you provided. there are sleepers departing at 16:30 and 17:50 and a diesel rail car at 21:00. The same number of trains as before, but at slightly earlier times - I believe.
