Pattaya will always have a bad image in the press. The world is full of prudes and hypocrites and sex outside of marriage will never be accepted by the puritanical masses.

Who cares if they are all sneaking out and boffing their mate's family members and best friends? At least they are trying to hide it. :)

what is giving Pattaya a bad world image?

Have you had a walk down Walking Street after dark lately? Not passing judgment personally, but it isn't exactly wholesome entertainment for the children. Also, have a read of the top headlines in the Pattaya News Clippings sub-forum. The media tends to prefer printing the bad news because it is more interesting, and so it sells better. There's plenty of good in Pattaya, but there is also plenty of bad. Here is a snapshot of the top 10 headlines at the time of this reply:

  • Swiss Man Involved In Knife Attack
  • Japanese Tourist Reports Theft From His 5 Star Luxury Hotel Room.
  • Lucifer Fire
  • Teenage boy sucked into Pool Pump and killed
  • Goto first unread Illegal Drugs And Arms Swoop Canadian Man Arrested
  • Couple Returns From Day Out To Find Their Home Ransacked And Items Of Value Stolen.
  • Some Bars Defy Police Orders And Continue To Serve Alcohol During Religious Holiday.
  • Danish Ex-pat Caught Up In 200,000 Baht House Robbery.
  • Pattaya Woman Slashed To Death By Friend

Is gang violence in naklua area really that bad ??? seems theres shootings in snooker halls every week!

being a Falang and not frequenting Thai pool halls ,i dont really think that it affects us and cannot see it being reported in the overseas press ,although i believe it is happening .

What makes me laugh is people back in the home country who slag off Pattaya or Thailand and have never actually visited.

I actually don't know any male who has come to Pattaya for a holiday and not had a great time.

i think you hit the nail on the head when you said "male" when i am back in Britain and mention that we live in Pattaya every woman cringes and every guy smiles. That goes for Thailand as a whole.

In answer to the topic title.....yes.

Pattaya is full of pro's.

And cons.

:)

The pro's are inside the bars - the cons are the rest.

Pros:

Carnival-like energy (hard to get bored)

Situated on the beach

Decent choices of Western food

Good choice of movie theaters

Some decent malls w/ ac

Foodland (etc)

Ladies for rent

Cons:

Poor infrastructure

Too much traffic

Too many people

Too many concrete coffins

Too many bad farangs

Too many bad Thais (most unfriendly in all of Thailand)

Too much crime

Too filthy/dirty (the air, water, etc)

Too expensive (prices have risen off the scale of what is reasonable for the location and services)

Decent choices of Western food

Some decent malls w/ ac

Foodland (etc)

Ladies for rent

Also young men for rent

Also katoeys for rent

Also some of the best PEOPLE WATCHING on the planet if you like a freak show (and God knows I do)

Also the PRICES for Western food much more reasonable than Bangkok, Bangkok people come to Pattaya for the restaurants, yes it is true

my friends overseas who have not visited Thailand or specifically Pattaya are more shocked that i go shopping at Tesco, eat at nice restaurants, grab an occasional Mickey D, go to the odd pub quiz night and generally live a 'normal life' thats not too dissimilar to my previous life.

most of them (men & women) assume i am behaving like a horny rabbit in Brer woods and i often laugh to myself about it and think 'if they could see me now' when i am doing very ordinary, mundane things and not as they imagine, making myself busy chasing everything in a skirt.

farangs behaving badly and/or getting into trouble...that's what gives Pattaya a bad name. these people are the noisy minority who makes the most noise and gets the most attention. Examples:

- oooh, I've been scammed by a thai girl/boy/katoey and so I'll jump off the nearest balcony or go hang myself.

- ooops, got caught with an underage girl/boy/katoey

- oh, i thought these pills that I have been asked to carry were vitamins

- aw shucks, I thought I could get drunk and behave as badly as I want without consequence

- dam_n, Interpol caught up with me finally

the silent majority are quite happy here living normal, ordinary and sedate lives :-)

Not being critical at all, just asking, - why come to Thailand to do pretty much what you did in your home country. There must have been some reason for you up-sticks and come so far - what was it ??

I was happy enough with my life in my own country but here I can do more of the same in a better climate. There is also a lot more alternative entertainment around should I want it. Much happier here.

Think there is not much reported about Pattaya in the world press. It's a great place to live, personally I don't want it to become St. Tropez of the East Coast and I think it will never be. Why all people start denying Pattaya's history and origin? Nowadays everybody can live here up to his taste and choices. This is an option I never found in Europe and that is why I love the place!

Bingo

family market assuming you mean kids, well that would be child abuse imo

porn being sold openly on the streets

ungaurd cooking pots

pot holes in the pavements

traffic

bits of steel sticking out on pavements(yes i stubbed my toe last christmas)

dirty beaches(with football size bolders half buried and yes it happened again ouch)

polluted sea

i came to have a better, less encumbered life

despite other posters assertions, i did not come for the sex, nor was i running away from debts or a failed marriage/relationship.

i was at a milestone, i was 40, had paid off my various mortgages and had worked long hours for many years, saving money and always intending to retire early

i was looking at Spain, Florida and others.

someone said have a look at Thailand, its very anglocised, they drive on the same side, its pretty first world in some areas and its cheap

so i came over a few times, looked around a lot, liked what i saw and within 6 months moved.

i was also sick of the political correctness, petty beurocracy and religious fervour sweeping the uk and being allowed to prosper by the Labour government

i was sick of watching my taxes being paid out to immigrants who could not even speak english

one could no longer even voice an opinion in ones own country in safety

when i first came here, it was more free and easy than it is now

that made it attractive to my style of living

also opportunities were here to live a better life in the sun

for the price of a terraced house in a depressed backwater in UK

one could have a three bedroomed villa with a pool

so it wasn't a tough desicion to make

someone once told me many years ago that a poor man can live like a rich man here

its not true now but it was then........

not complicated, short answer: better lifestyle than UK

Thanks timekeeper for that explanation. I agree entirely but speaking as one who was, initially, attracted by the sex I quickly learned to appreciate the wider attractions of the country.

Not perfect (thank goodness) but it does not profess to be. I whole-heartedly agree that it is a better lifestyle than the UK - a (my) country that I no longer feel at home in.

thanks JMS and Chaimai.

your understanding is appreciated

despite being a seasoned traveller in Europe, and having visited Singapore, Malaysia etc whilst here

i would not profess to having travelled around Thailand much in my ten years

i have found that the 10 square miles of Pattaya and its suburbs are quite enough Thailand for me.

i often refer to Pattaya as 'Little Britain' (obviously avoiding any connotations from the TV series)
