If we are in a bar and thai working girl thinks my lady is also working, I don't mind, we can chat, and there is no bad feeling in any direction. But if a farang man thinks she is a working girl I don't like it - perhaps because there is an element of "looking down" at her.

Good question - I don't really know why it bothers me, and perhaps it is in part my ego ? Anyway, it does not bother me much - I have learned to live with the looks. By the way, with farangs it does not have to be in a bar where there are working girls. I think a lot of farangs (male and female) do look down on working girls, and, as my wife is younger than me, some assume that is the set-up.

We get a lot of chuckles at clear misconceptions of our relationship, as my wife who is 50 is assumed by falangs to be about 30.

Even when they realise we are married, they assume it is a fatherly-daughterly relationship; whereas it is much more mother-son. (I sometimes say she is addicted to mothering, but that is OK (in fact, great) because I am addicted to being mothered.)

To sbk; yes, there is a very strong 'mothering' thing in the air in Thailand.

Good mothering (bringing the kids up properly) is great .

But bad mothering is a curse. I am convinced that a lot of Thai men grow up to be irresponsible because their mothers spoil them rotten.

As a teenager, my wife somehow saw good mothering by some falang mother and when she became a mother, decided that she would bring her sons up 'more falang'.

Not many Thai boys have to do their share of the washing up!!

What I find a bit uncool is to walk on the street with my 14-year stepdaughter, without wife being present. Being 32 myself, it doesn't take too much imagination to think what the situation could be. The amount of glances does vary with where we are, of course - walking around to rent some VCDs in Pattaya is different from looking for some street food near a central bangkok hotel. It does sound a bit cheeky, but also a bit unnatural and uncommon given the circumstances (no offense, Nordic Man).

However, in Bangkok and other areas in Thailand, it is most common for farang men to be approached by Thai women, very often whether they are with a woman or not. The action by the farang woman seems to be a bit off, because she approached a strange farang man with his Thai wife, in a region that is notoriously hostile or indifferent to farang women, and then walked away immediately.

I would wager that she did that more for your wife's benefit, quite possibly as payback to other anonymous Thai women who more often have no problem approaching an attached farang man right in front of his companion.

I was once offered 2000Thb by a kathoey on Samui (when i was just strolling through Chaweng one evening minding my own business, i must add). It would seem that this is the going rate for us falang. I didn't hang around to ascertain the details of exactly what i would be required to do, but he did shout after me that he was prepared to pay more if that was the problem.

Reading all this makes me feel like a pervert. I myself have attempted to pick up farang girls in Thailand and have found that it is not easy at all. Now I understand - if you are always getting approached as hookers, you get a bit defensive. I am not the most good looking guy on the planet, but I am not ugly and in other countries I can usually get a polite response. I, unlike most of my peers, like farang women in bed and unless, it is a flow show or another high quality entertainment event, I find it is usually impossible to get a converstaion going with a farang girl. Is there anywhere else I could meet farang girls and talk normally other than at the odd rockin flow concert?
