Kevin quotes prices though admits they are estimates. So of no value at all. Is he trying to keep threads open for as long as possible as he did in the water thread and the recent thread closed by a moderator

Then we get posts on Canada etc

My post on the prices in BC are only to compare what someone may or may not think is a good price in Thailand. I compare prices all the time regardless of what country I'm in when I'm dining or traveling. I don't like paying North American prices when dining in third world countries where the restaurant owners pay their staff third world wages. However, I also understand that imported food WILL cost more and hence the higher price. I know that cheese is far more expensive in Thailand than it is in Canada and hence a pizza would probably cost a similar price in both places. Fish are easily obtained in Thailand and so are potatoes, so you should get a reasonable Thai price for them everywhere.

Many places are using imported cod and potatoes are not all that cheap in Thailand. Imported malt vinegar is expensive too. :)

Cod is now on the endagered species list for the WWF which is one reason why it is so expensive.

Cheese is far more expensive 'agreed' but how can they justify that.

It's probably three ++ times the price of cheese in Oz or NZ.

A kilo of potatoes in Thailand cost what you would get 5kg for in NZ.

The cheese is not made here so there is some transportation costs but potatoes are grown here so how can the price be justified.

Marmite and or Vegemite cost around eight times the cost of where they are produced. You can get a whole lot of either in a 20 ft container so how come they are off the planet price wise in the realm.

I have a theory for example the potatoes, "if Thais think that expats like some particular food they will load the prices up"

OK on things like wine etc., there is tax but there is no tax on potatoes grown in the realm.

And I am not a 'cheap charlie' but I don't like stings or scams regardless of where they are encountered :)

John B,

you will find cheese prices arent as cheap as they used to be in NZ, and i would assume Aus as well.

in NZ (from Foodtown online) NZ$1 is currently 24 baht

500 gm block of Anchor Mild will set you back $8.49 or 200 baht

700 gm is over $11 or 264 baht

250 gm is $4.75 or 114 baht

I think I paid 170 baht for my 250gm anchor Tasty from Carrefour last time out

its more expensive than the other crap they have, but I like my kiwi cheese :)

The extra costs are most likely the air freight

with potatoes in NZ, they vary in price, depending on pack size but are about $3 1 kg pack

4kg may cost $5

My mate says down his local thai market he buys 1kg potatoes for 10 baht,

thats cheaper than NZ prices!

in the several years ive been back to NZ, i have noticed food prices have steadily risen, especially meat and vege, but interestingly enough food prices this year have taken a tumble NZ Herald

On the whole im very happy with food prices here

*all this is totally off topic ~ bite me :D

All this talk about food and I had to go out and buy 2 McChicken burgers. I had a two for one ticket and I ate both for $4.29 (about 140 baht). I forego the fries and Coke though... it's fattening. :D:D

I stand corrected about the imported foods. :)

I guess I'll just stick with my Kow pad moo, Kai ut sai, kai te ow, or Pad Thai gai when I get back to Thailand. I'm a cheap charlie everywhere. :D

Where the hel_l do you buy your potatoes?! I buy potatoes from Muang Mai and Tonpayom markets, and pay around 30 Baht per kilo. (I'm sure you could source bulk amounts for even cheaper.) That's around 50p sterling per kilo. Are you telling me you can buy 5kg of potatoes in NZ for 50p? I would be surprised if this was the case.

My theory is - if you buy fruit and veg from hi-so supermarkets like Rimping and Tops, expect to pay heavily inflated hi-so prices. Running that aircon at 20C all day isn't free you know!

If you want the Thai price, go to the markets.

As for fish and chips, I went to Cheerful Charlie's expecting good things, but left thinking it was pretty average. I can make better fish and chips myself for half the price. Not been to Piggy's yet so can't comment.

I think you will find it's not exclusively Thai, but a fairly universal marketing technique...pricing to what the market will bear.
