Youre not going to believe this one....or maybe you are!! Had lunch Sunday in a Chiang Mai restaurant, a branch of a large National chain with branches in every Town and City. Ordered my food and as is my preference, ordered a Soda Water to accompany it.

"Sorry, we cant sell Soda Water today due to alcohol ban on an election day." "But its Soda Water, says I, Water with gas..no alcohol involved" "No, Sir, its banned today as its part of an alcoholic drink" "What says I?" "You know, as in Scotch and Soda, part of an alcoholic drink"

Doh!!!!!! As Homer simpson would say. Theres just no answer to logic like that!!!

I settled for an Orange Juice which they were happy to serve, despite it being part of another alcoholic drink, Gin and Orange???!!!

Did they serve it with ice I wonder, that too is part of an alcoholic drink ?

I remember one Buddha day some years ago when the local 7/11 was also refusing to sell soda by virtue of the same logic.

Only last month when in a one buffalo town somewhere in the south the 7/11 refused to sell beer at two minutes to 5pm.

Even my wife was amazed at this.

We walked down the road 5 yards and got a cold beer from the local minimart and a good conversation with the owner!

The moral is..... avoid "national chains" whenever there is an alternative

Actually, they didnt give me ice with the Orange Juice. Hmmm. The plot thickens!!

Oh, and when I drove home, passed at least ten "local (Thai) bars" with guys sitting drinking beer!!

I feel your pain, it is indeed fustrating.

However it is not their (7/11 etc.) fault as they must abide by the law and purchases are registered by time in the till. I suspect that one can of beer sold at 4:59 could potentially see them fined.

Had this also before. Wanted a soda in some small restaurant. Turned out the owners were muslims and did not sell alcohol. :)
