Thailand's tourist arrivals to expand 10-15% in 2010

BANGKOK: -- The number of visitors to Thailand will expand 10-15 per cent next tyear to 14.5-15 million next year thanks to global economic recovery, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

It also expects the sector to generate higher income, in line with the rising number of tourist. The tourism income should rise 10-15 per cent to Bt500-Bt530 billion.

Thanavath Phonvichai, director of the university's Economic and Business Forecasting Centre, said that the global economic recovery is a major factor to create positive growth for the Kingdom's tourism industry.

It is also expected that the number of foreign tourists to Thailand will fall to 12.5 million to13 million this year, while tourism income would drop to Bt420 billion to Bt450 billion.

I am not an economist - but I would offer this guy some simple advice:

Manufucturing jobs in America and Europe have gone - never to return

Education standards in the west have/are falling = less competitive = lower income

Stimulus package involved printing fiat currency from thin air further indebting the already debt laden populations

Simply put living standards in the west are falling and will continue to fall - there is no recovery. Papering over the cracks is not a recovery

The number of tourists include 2.257.877 tourists (2007) from Asean countries: Malaysia, Burma, Laos, Cambodia Malaysia's portion is already 1.551.959

If you would include Indonesia (233.919), Singapore (799.100)and Vietnam (254.252) it would be 1.287.271 extra tourists and totaling 2.839.230 "tourists" from the mentioned countries above.

I'm not even talking about China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea totaling some 4 million tourists.

In comparison: Europe is good for a low 3.7 million; the Americas for 818.000; Oceania for 731.000; Middle East for 454.000 and South Asia for 685.000

All numbers for 2007.

That point is what struck me........they continue to repeat that mantra over and over again, forgetting about the myriad of other factors that have to do with Thai decision making...........they have done it to themselves.

Also interesting to know, or maybe even the most interesting, the spending per day per tourist and the number of days staying in Thailand.

A tourist spending 5000 baht a day and staying for 15 days is a lot more as a tourist spending 2500 baht a day and staying for 5 days.

But like everywhere in the world, the number of tourists seem to be more important as the amount of money spent in the country by those tourists

From a UK perspective, rising student tuition fees and financial pressures mean there's no prospect of a return to the glory days of round-the-world gap years anytime soon. Bad news for places like Pai, I'd say. High-end tourism, though, may recover quicker?
