Traffic Problems In Chiang Mai

With you two's agreement and knack for reading the posts made on this topic and then giving your translation/interpretation, I am surprised you have not been offered employment by the English language newspapers in Bangkok.

Some folks are so complicated they cannot see the simple solutions.

I believe these folks are government employees who feel unless millions of dollars and years of study are needed then there is no answer, it's called job security !

and replying in bold makes the answer to me so much clearer :)

After reading many reply's on TV I found it much easier to read the reply of a poster if it is in bold or italics. Otherwise why is it available to us ? :D

Overall in Thailand I would imagine expat road users are under 1% of total road miles.

Any information?

Chiang Mai is an ancient city,

It has a moat built in the 1700's.

It could be compared to Sienna, Italy or other very historic towns worldwide.

It is most decidedly not the Big Mango. And I don't think the powers that be will rip up the city so as to convenience car drivers.

Most folks here in Lanna are still rural, and poor. The Wave and the Dream reign supreme.

If you don't ride a motorsai, whether for age, fright or skill considerations...I am sorry, just get used to sitting in traffic, breathing diesel fumes.

Heartless commentary, I know.

But just tellin' it like it is.

Edit: I realize the above sounds way too harsh to me. But I do stand by it.

I've lived under all the 3 or 4 types of rural/urban environment. To whit:

1) the Thai rice farmer/Dutch Amsterdamer hedge fund kind of guy.....roll out of bed, ride a bicycle 2 km. to work.

2) Have a job with a 25 min. commute.

3) Same as above, but with a 45 min. commute instead.

4) moved to CM; lost all the above..much happier now. :)

Most drivers/riders in CMai usually obey most traffic signals.

Only my experience, but I find more people going through red lights here than in the uk.

If you mean running through 2 seconds after yellow changes to red, I agree. Slightly worse than Houston. :)

Yes;, CMai city is not designed for autos.

No. I refer to vehicles going through when the light has been red for some time. I would not be taht pedantic to worry about 2 seconds

Your experience may be different

Let me see if I have this right

. . . the poor Thai people don't want bigger roads.

Have I got that right . . . ?

I have no idea, but I am curious about the basis you have for thinking you are right. Has there been a poll of some kind on this subject? Could you post a related link for us?

Sorry, poor Thai people don't have internet.

You could try talking to some poor Thai people. (but you would need to learn Thai)

If a poll has indeed been done, maybe the people behind it do have internet? :)

Well said ! The folks who come here with their 21st century SUVs cannot understand why they have problems in a 19th century town. Lets just fill in the moat and knock down all those confusing gates and pave a 6 laner around the town so they can get to the shopping centers faster. sheeze!!!
