Can anybody fill me in what is the cheapest way to organise a Education Visa?...

You mention neither your nationality nor your country of current residence. You apply for a non-ED visa – for any visa – at a Thai cosulate. Not all consulates use the same criteria for approving a visa application, so you should check with the consulate where you plan to apply. The consulate will also be able to tell you the visa fee in the local currency.

I'm an EU national living in Thailand.

I just read about Muay thai courses that might be able to sponsor a non-ed visa. But this is the first I've heard about it. and would interested in finding out more info if anybody knows anything about it.

Thanks.

Not sure about cheaper overall, but in Pattaya is at least one language school willing to prepare the paperwork for you while paying for the education in installments.

7,500 Baht to get all started and then a monthly fee. Instead of paying the full year upfront. Overall price probably the same though.

Don't know the name of the school, read it in a newspaper...

With Education visas, the law apparently demands that a student prepay a certain amount of their tuition + check in at immigration.

Walen is likely the most expensive school around, as far as hourly tuition rates go (they charge between 200 and 700 baht/hr depending on program). But the low amount that you need to prepay seems fair, and they don't appear to charge extra admin fees like some schools. (Any current Walen students who can comment?)

I almost chose Walen, after comparing to several other schools up here in CM. Many others wanted me to prepay 30,000 + pay an admin fee + visa costs. Walen seemed cheapest from an admin fee point of view. but other schools were cheap on the hourly fees.

The main point is to ask each school about 1) the amount you must Prepay, 2) the costs of hourly study (as this is deducted from your pre-paid tuition), 3) what admin fees they charge for the process, 4) the duration of visa you will be granted (some schools incorrectly say the visa is "one year", when it's actually a 3-month visa which is extended at immigration every few months for 1900 baht), and 4) whether you can travel and take breaks during your ED visa period and if you'll lose your pre-paid tuition if you need to travel.

[in the end I didn't go for an Ed visa, as I have a 12 year old (farang) daughter who could not come 'under' my Ed visa. At that age she would've needed her own visa anyway, so we found another option.]

How do you work that out? 24,960 baht for 180 lessons. At 50 mins per lesson that's still less than 167 baht per hour.

^ Sorry, I've heard that there are far cheaper methods.

Hi Yimmy, we have quite a few students coming to us because they are not happy with services of some competing newly opened schools. You may indeed save 2,000-3,000 Baht ( the only way to compete with Walen is to offer seemingly similar service for a little less) but will it be worth the headache if you do not receive good service and even get in trouble? You get what you pay for. Walen is not the cheapest but the best value. If, however, on average saving 200-300 Baht a month is such a big deal then go ahead and search out the cheapest schools out there.

Walen is certainly the most popular Thai school in Chiangmai so it cannot be that bad. And we continue to grow. Visit us. Our Chiangmai staff are very competent and will take good care of your learning as well as visa needs.

American University Alumni (AUA) also teaches Thai to foreigners, and they are accredited with the Ministry of Education for visa purposes:

AUA specifically state on their webiste that they will not assist with educational visas or extensions of stay.

That has changed then. Sorry I didn't check this on the updated website, I spoke from past experience.
