I heard about this last night on BKK radio.

Although I am not catholic I recognize the importance of this man to the religion... it's a shame for anyone to go through a heart attack and be given last rites.

But why are we talking about it here?

Why is it on the forum?

How is it Thailand related?

Tell me instead more about the Buddhist monk at the temple in Chachoengsao, who although on death's bed himself, still manages to give blessings and encouragement to thousands of people every week, and is reputed to have amazing healing powers.

Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. With his anti-condom messages, the Pope is responsible for more deaths than Hitler. Let's hope the next Pope won't still be stuck in the 17th century.

I though it was an April Fools prank?

If it is not .... isn't it a bit hypocratic that the Pope decides he does not want to be kept alive with life-support machinery all the while the Catholic church is yapping over turning off life support for that brain-dead woman in US?

Just helps prove that there is no god. After all, the pope is supposed to be god's most holy representative on earth (as far as the catholics are concerned). After a life-time devoted to the service of god, what is his reward ? A prolonged, painful death.

Millions of people praying for him won't change anything, but that doesn't seem to sink in to their thinking. The religious right will come up with the theory that god is testing his most holy servant in his dying days. Others will say it is god's will. Still others will say it is not for us to understand why god does what he does.

Just goes to show that no matter how rich, how powerful or how devote your are, you're still going to die eventually. I just wish there was a way to contact people after they've died, so I can laugh at them when they realize that there is no heaven or ######, and it's all just been a great big lie.

Thats what I thought too ( though hypocritical , not hypocratic ) , but I am sure it is lost on them.

:D Why does the vatican need lightning rods? :o

That's why I moved the topic down here where we aren't quite so picky about things like that. The odd general interest thread won't kill us.

...or the 250,000 Thai Catholics who are now in mourning?

Whatever we might think of Catholics or religion in general, the Pope was truly a man of peace and did a lot to help end the communist domination of eastern Europe.

I mourn his passing ....

....and out of respect to them, and the millions around the world who now mourn, let's give them a respectful silence from bashing the dead. This isn't the the orders of a power-hungry moderator intent on squashing your freedom of expression, its just a request to be polite and treat those in mourning with some simple decency.

Thank you.

Not Thailand related? Too many Secularists around here or what. Whether you are Catholic, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Atheist, or Agnostic, or you just don't care at all about religion, it does not matter. The Pope was a man of both theological and secular brilliance, of pure decency, and has had a tremendous impact on our world since 1978. We will all be a bit poorer after his loss... :o
