The local pharmacy referred to a hospital pharmacy. Is this common? Or is Avandamed 1000 a prescription drug?

Where are you Type 2 diabetics get your fix?

And is some B.O. part of the known side effects? I just

noticed how my pillow is, well, reeking... :)

Cheers,

Chris

Does not require a prescription in Thailand. But will be costly as it is imported and as such may not be that widely uised here.

Large pharmacies in BKK should carry it.

As you are presumably on it long-term, see if your local pharmacy can special order it for you in bulk, that will save on costs some. Or you can buy in bulk directly from the distributor yourself:

I haven't heard of BO per se being a side effect, but liver damage is, and liver disease can result in bad BO so be sure to have your liver enzymes (AST/ALT) checked. While you are at, get a creatnine level too to check kidney function as kidney disease can also cause bad BO.

If elevated need to consult a doctor and may need to change medication.

If AST/ALT normal, need to recheck periodically e.g. every 6 months. It's an inexpensive blood test.

I'm assuming you closely monitor your BS and thus the other common cause of bad BO, daibetic ketoacidosis, not a concern...

Actually I have not found many checking blood sugar here more than a hospital check every 3 months if not insulin dependent if wife and her family are any indication (and two are retired RN's). No doctor has ever suggested it and from the trouble I have had finding supplies (even when testers for sale they do not stock strips) doubt many here is Thailand do regular checks. It is not cheap and the normal generation of testers here seems to support Dracula rather than comfort.

Actaully I've seen a lot of threads on the pros and cons and sources for testing kits and I know some of the diabetcs here do monitor regulalry. Maydepends in part on how stable the diabetes is.

For sure a diabetic with a noticeable new odor to their sweat should check to make sure their sugra is adequately controlled. If not doing self tests, then get a FBS at ah ospital.

Yes there are a number of threads but these are from the expat community who are more used to testing. I do not believe most Thai doctors do more than hospital FBS every 3 months and HbA1c probably less often.

I am certinaly not advocating not testing but have found it an uphill battle in my family and expect most Thai would not be keen on paying for a strip of paper they throw away after mutilating themselves. :)

As for local testers they are at least one or two generations behind other areas of the world - I have had an imported Accu-Check Aviva for several years but still have to import strips (and this is a major Thai player but only for old models which require a lot more blood). Previously had a One Touch Ultra which could find supplie for in Chiang Mai but here in Bangkok check of 10 drugs stores only found one and they could not supply strips without special order. Last special order were fake (as confirmed on internet by lot number) so that was when order the Accu-Check from Ebay UK thinking strips would soon be easily available here as it is the major player. Wrong.
