New Boat Pier Coming With Speed Boats Taling Ngam

Featured Replies

The new boat pier is well underway in Taling Ngam at the Taling Ngam resort. I frequent the west side of Koh Samui because it is quiet and peaceful. Soon there will be high speed boats powering around the sea. I don't think it is a good idea, because I think there should still be a place on Koh Samui where the quiet type people can go. What are your opinions?

The pier being built is a fact, I can see it from my house. In theory, do you need some kind of permit to build things like this into the ocean? I would estimate it's length at about 80 to 100 meters. I have been wondering if this is being done to make the hotel there more attractive to potential buyers. I have been told the property was purchased by Lehman Brothers before there bankruptcy, not sure if this is correct.

Is it a fixed or float able jetty?

As "islandguy" mentioned it is -nearly- impossible to build a private pier in Thailand.

Several years ago, in Koh Phangan, my partner worked as an architect on a project which involved a pier.

Even after her strong negative points regarding this construction, the developer -farang- built it.

Authorities let him constructed it... and destroyed it just after completion!

There is a new hotel next to beach republic in Lamai, they have a floating pier out to sea ( Cost 9 Million ). I suppose that's the same.

it was bought by them in around 2005 or 2006. Was for sale in 2008 by them.

I've seen the "floating jetty" in Lamai at the new Langham Place I believe. Not up close mind you but from atop the mountain behind. It must be all of 80 to 100m and has got to be anchored somehow to the seabed. But as most of you know these structures are not under the authority of the local Tessaban but controlled by the Marine Department(formerly the Harbour Department).

This is an interesting read The History of the Marine Department

Can't really see how allowing these structures to be built willy nilly can promote tourism though, which is what I understand the Marine Dept has as one of its' aims.

Major bummer! The west coast is beautiful. A Thai friend who grew up in Nathon said it was the loveliest beach before they built that ugly wall and the piers. And the water in that area is so clear and turquoise-coloured, it's a real pity.
