Tinted Windows Not Welcome

i was turned away at sadao border crossing into malaysia with my car i had all paper work in order

the reason my car had tinted windows not full tint not allowed can not yet the tourist vans/buses were let in

I have never been in a car, I was going a few years back and then the Law was front windscreen 30% Tint, side max of 50% tint.

If a car was let in and then latter stopped by Police the on-the-spot fine was RM300

If I remember rightly at the time if anyone was stopped because there tint was to dark, they the driver had to remove the tint or the car would be impounded, the driver could be arrested

At the time my car had 50% + mirror tints, so did not even bother to try... Present car has 30% all round.

Anyone know the official maximum tint permitted in Malaysia? And how do you tell what yours is?

Although I have not tested it, the Mitsubishi dealer here in Hatyai has told us that 40% is the max allowed in Malaysia.

I would guess that you are also breaking the law in Thailand. Several years ago Thailand passed a law limiting the degree of tint allowed. I don't remember what it was. As is normal, no one seems to pay any attention to the law.

In most countries including Malaysia, tinting of windshield and front side windows is illegal. This is to see driver, so 20-30% may be accepted if lucky.

That law was removed again. dark film no problem, even 80%, but mirror film still not ok in some transportatio office. Depent on location

It's not surprising that the law was repealed. I do remember that the Hi-So people with their expensive cars and their own drivers were very upset.

As it should be, I hate it when I get a rented car with tinted windshields the distortion is terrible and magnified ten fold at night.. And anything darker then that on the side windows is down right dangerous at night too, it makes me wonder how many of these night time accidents are caused by this, especially on those cases where someone is riding a scooter or driving a car without headlights as is so often the case here....

Yes, do the BIB can see easly from far away, when you drive down the road, that you are a farang and cash up your money every day. Should be happy tha way it is.

Dead right Warp. Its impossible to see unlit vehicles in rural areas until they are almost on top of you. Very scary.

I've read before that another reason for banning tinted windows in the psychological concept of depersonalization. People who are courteous, careful and considerate in person turn into animals when they get behind the wheel of a car because they lose their identity. Tinted windows are supposed to make this worse since they block and human eye to eye contact between the driver and others on the road. The Thais certainly fit the above description, wonderful people who turn stupid, selfish, thoughtless and reckless when they get into a car.
